Nuzzling in to her hair, he settled and relaxed like he was finally home. Cael might not have had preternatural senses like Lissa did, but the emotional connection on both sides was strong enough that it didn’t matter that Cael was human. He just knew he couldn’t spend another day of his life without her, no matter how pissed off Devin might be when he found out Cael was back.

If Devin wanted him gone this time, he’d have to kill him himself, and Cael doubted Dev would put Lissa at risk like that all over again.

Her fingers kneaded at his chest a little, the more feline aspects of her personality shining through as she relaxed. Had she been able to, she would had practically rolled herself all over him until their scents were completely tangled again, but she knew she would get sick or pass out if she tried. Which would not do her a whole lot of good in trying to convince him that she was okay.

“Don’t freak out, but they’re still doing blood transfusions on me every couple of days,” she warned, knowing it would be better to get that out of the way before he had to witness it happening.

“Then looks like it’s the self-support option for you. Might be better anyway? I think most people are more reliable than for themselves. I mean, I’m not. But people tend to be more functioning than me.”

Kiana shook her head, feeling more than a little defeated. Living on the run with three small children wasn’t easy. “It’s not that simple.”

She shrugged. “People do. Wil’s sad, isn’t she? I think they assume we both are.” But Casey wasn’t certain sad was even the emotion Willow felt. “She knows it can’t end well, right? Like… even if I were more…” She gestured vaguely. “Functional or whatever, I’m still mostly mortal. What the fuck’s even the point?”

“Sad isn’t the word I’d use for Wil.” Broken was closer to the truth, really, when it came to her sister. Not that he minded too much, Phobos was more attached to Willow than he was. “Or maybe she knows something neither one of us do. Besides, uncle Hades doesn’t want your mother in the Underworld at all. Do you really think anyone is stupid enough to piss your mother off? I think they learned their lesson when they let your dad die the first time.”

Ara paused. Generally she excelled at reading others, but it was difficult to know whether or not the man was lying. She had no clue what card she could possibly play—he would easily overpower her, so surprising him with her weapon would be ideal, but could she possibly use her powers to her advantage?

Sliding cautiously closer, she kept her tone even, watching the other with interest. “Then why don’t you tell me how to keep your interest? It’s only fair to give me a fighting chance.”

“That would be cheating. If you can’t find a way to make yourself interesting, then I would hardly consider you worth the oxygen you’re using.”

He was a little amused that she had moved closer when most would have sought to put distance between themselves and someone that literally made a threat on their life. He wasn’t sure if she was brave, stupid, or actually suicidal. He was sort of hoping on the first two more than the third.

“Are you ever not studying?” she asked, not that she minded so much, but she’d never quite gotten the appeal of it all. Learning was great, but she’d always preferred doing.

She knew she should probably tell the truth, that the book had been given to her by someone she had recently met, but the differences in what it said and what Robbie had been teaching her was starting to make her feel panicked. “You sound like Connor when you say that,” she teased lightly.
