Cael couldn’t help be at least a little concerned by that news, but the fact she was still alive and the state she had been in the last time he’d seen her eased that concern enough in that it was clearly for the benefit of her continued recovery.

“It wasn’t a regular gunshot, was it?” he asked, pulling together the pieces of information he had now and drawing a fairly logical conclusion. “I mean, not like how it would affect me if I had been shot instead, right?”

“Silver,” she answered with a grumble. “Damn bullet basically designed to shatter on impact. We didn’t get all the pieces out at first.” And it had gradually poisoned her to the point of near organ failure.

“A lot of stories about shifters are bullshit, but the silver allergy one is, sadly, fucking true. Had it gotten me a little lower and hit my lungs or heart, I wouldn’t have made it.” Or over enough to hit her spinal column, but she wasn’t going to tell him just how close that had been.

Nuzzling in to her hair, he settled and relaxed like he was finally home. Cael might not have had preternatural senses like Lissa did, but the emotional connection on both sides was strong enough that it didn’t matter that Cael was human. He just knew he couldn’t spend another day of his life without her, no matter how pissed off Devin might be when he found out Cael was back.

If Devin wanted him gone this time, he’d have to kill him himself, and Cael doubted Dev would put Lissa at risk like that all over again.

Her fingers kneaded at his chest a little, the more feline aspects of her personality shining through as she relaxed. Had she been able to, she would had practically rolled herself all over him until their scents were completely tangled again, but she knew she would get sick or pass out if she tried. Which would not do her a whole lot of good in trying to convince him that she was okay.

“Don’t freak out, but they’re still doing blood transfusions on me every couple of days,” she warned, knowing it would be better to get that out of the way before he had to witness it happening.

“Deal,” he shot back, scooping her up and carrying her bridal style up to her room, getting her settled on the bed and complying with her demand to remove his shirt. Sure, it wouldn’t look good if Devin showed up, but Cael figured he could be dressed in an anthropomorphised animal sports mascot costume and it wouldn’t make any difference to Dev’s reaction to seeing him.

There was a faint growl of protest when he settled her back onto her bed, but it was short lived was she watched him strip. He wasn’t getting that shirt back, but she had a feeling he knew that already. It would hardly be the first time she had stolen some of his clothes.

Lissa curled around him tightly, her face buried against the crook of his neck as she breathed in his scent. She had needed this so terribly, needed him, and as soon as she was back to strength, she was punching her brother in the throat for putting both of them through this hell.

rustandglass·:

“I’m sure you are, but wouldn’t it still be better to go cuddle up in your bed for a while before your brother realises I’m here and all hell breaks loose?” he pointed out, knowing how stubborn Lissa could be and not wanting to argue with her.

He had a point, she knew that, but she also knew exactly what he was doing. It was almost enough to make her dig her heels in, but she was starting to feel dizzy. “Fine. But the shirt’s gotta go,” she grumbled, finally conceding.

rustandglass·:

“It’s okay. It’s not your fault,” he repeated soothingly, just wanting to hold onto her and make up for how much he’d missed her.

“Come on, let’s get you inside. You look like you need to rest and it’s going to be bad enough when Devin finds out I’m here without putting you under even more stress.”

“I’m fine,” she protested, knowing damn well that her legs were still having trouble holding her up for long periods of time. Or even normal lengths of time. But she didn’t want him to worry any more than he had been forced to.

rustandglass·:

“Why does it matter? It’s not real, right?” Erys inquired with a vague air of insouciance. She wasn’t going to call either Grayson or Chayton a liar, but she wouldn’t stop anyone tripping themselves up trying to deny anything either.

“Righ’.” He looked a little more relieved when she seemed to just go along with it. It didn’t even matter to him if she was lying or not in believing him. “Jus’ wan’ed ta thank ya proper for no’ callin’ the cops on him.”

Another fevered whine caught in Zayde’s throat at the growl, the boy panting hard as he already drew nearer to release. If Devin kept up the current pace and carried on making him shiver like that, he wouldn’t hold out much longer than a few more seconds.

Devin growled again before nipping at Zayde’s neck, hellbent on pushing him over that edge. The more relaxed he was, the easier everything else would be on him.

Almost as if on cue, the doorknob jiggled. The sound was followed by a loud “ugh” the delicate sound of metal being clinked together. Why Jeff had taught the girl to pick locks at such a young age, Dev would never understand.

“I guess the party’s over,” he laughed, refusing to untangle from Lex quite yet.

“Aww,” Lex pouted, letting out a feigned huff and snuggling into Dev again for the last few seconds before the door would come flying open and they’d be ambushed by a small girl who liked to ask a lot of questions.

Devereux heard the moment the lock clicked over and, for a moment, he was grateful they were wearing clothes. Explaining anything else to Cammie was more than he wanted to do.

“Lex! You gotta sit next me for breakfast and breakfast time is now,” the girl demanded, standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips. She had taken a shining to her brother’s boyfriend, much to the slight annoyance of said brother.

The sound that came out of Zayde wasn’t even remotely close to anything resembling words, but a flailed hand suggested he was attempting to convince the other that he would be just fine wherever the other chose to leave him, even if it meant propping him up behind a dumpster in an alley with the hope nobody would mug his ass while he was out cold.

If he’d been able to think or speak in an intelligible manner, he might have at least been able to communicate that last place he would ever want to go, but since the bouncers knew who he was and who his father happened to be, it was likely that that would be where they’d advise Chayton to take him, regardless of whether he wanted to go or not.

The bouncer he had spoken to had given him an address, but Chayton knew the place, knew the reputation, and he sincerely doubted it would be a wise move. Part of him wondered if maybe that’s why the other was so royally fucked up. He knew he probably would be too if half of what he had heard was true.

“Come on, I know somewhere we can take ya,” he grumbled, moving to lift the other again. At least his hotel room would be quiet and out of sight of prying eyes, even if he didn’t like the idea of having a stranger there.
