“Not being human doesn’t make you not people,” he countered. “And neither does being kind of a dick. Otherwise, I don’t think I actually know any people.”

“Can you just accept that I have a certain fondness for you and am capable of missing your annoying ass?”

“Who said I was here for a bad reason? Do you think so little of your supervisors that you assume we only come to deliver punishments and bad news?” he asked, raising a brow at her and managing to maintain a serious demeanor despite his amusement.

The woman glared, not one for buying into things so easily. If she was afraid of him in any manner, it didn’t show. “Only time I ever see your sort is when Grayson fucks up and we get sent somewhere new so you can run damage control.” And she honestly liked it here.

“You’re tapping into ancient magic and you doubt immortality?” he asked, arching a brow at her expression. He saw no point in lying to her, so he easily answered, “Demon,” as though it were the most normal thing in the world. “Archdemon, actually. Although, if it’s of any comfort, I don’t currently want anything. I know my species has a… rather poor reputation.”

The energy around her swelled at the immediate spike of fear that shit through her at his answer. Demons were bad enough, she knew that much, but a higher ranking one was far more dangerous in the long run. The lines weren’t going to let her go, but they were going to let him too close either.

“You shouldn’t be here.” She shouldn’t be here, but at least he had the option of walking away.

“There’s a first time for everything,” Matt murmured, a smirk on his face as he got settled again, more than happy to share his bed.

“Let me know if you need me to turn the air-con off, ‘kay?”

“I don’t want you to overheat,” he muttered, voice muffled from the way his face was buried against the other’s shoulder.

He was still cold, but not quite as much so as he had been before crawling into bed with Matt. It would take at least an hour to warm himself up and, by then, he was hoping to be passed out.

“Deal,” he shot back, scooping her up and carrying her bridal style up to her room, getting her settled on the bed and complying with her demand to remove his shirt. Sure, it wouldn’t look good if Devin showed up, but Cael figured he could be dressed in an anthropomorphised animal sports mascot costume and it wouldn’t make any difference to Dev’s reaction to seeing him.

There was a faint growl of protest when he settled her back onto her bed, but it was short lived was she watched him strip. He wasn’t getting that shirt back, but she had a feeling he knew that already. It would hardly be the first time she had stolen some of his clothes.

Lissa curled around him tightly, her face buried against the crook of his neck as she breathed in his scent. She had needed this so terribly, needed him, and as soon as she was back to strength, she was punching her brother in the throat for putting both of them through this hell.

“Yes, and why not both? Both is good.”

“You actually gonna let them ink you this time or are you gonna play the “I just wanna watch you get inked” game again? Cuz if you try it, I’ll cut my hair short again,” he teased, a smirk on his lips. They both knew he wouldn’t, but it was more fun to play the game.
