“I don’t see how that has anything to do with what you did to him.”

Jack could see what Jericho was doing. He was deflecting, both to excuse his actions to Jack and to justify them to himself in equal measure. Even Chance was prone to telling himself lies over and over until he believed them to be the truth. Hell, even Jack had had to resort to that on occasion to cope with some of the lasting effects of his own mental health issues.

“So go ahead, get your excuses for that out on the table already. You disowned him anyway, right?”

He made his choice.”

There was a faint growl to the words, a deep disdain over the fact that Kellen had refused to return home where he had belonged. He regretted ever taking the boy to Brittia and Azrael and it showed.

“Are we done here? Because I have far better things to do than to be dealing with one of Chance’s unfortunate mistakes.”

Bailey had heard justifications like that more times than he could count. Even Zeke, who he’d pretty much considered the closest thing he ever had to an actual dad until he was freed and eventually met Isaac, had had trouble with that particular justification when trying to get his head around everything, so it was understandable.

“I know, but sometimes the family you make is better than the one you’re born into. It’s all about just giving yourself the chance to find and know something better.”

Conri was clearly reaching his limit as he drags his hands through his hair roughly. The scent of pure distress coming off of him in waves was enough to make him wonder if even the humans in the vicinity could smell it as well with some of the looks he was getting. 

“I don’t know how.” How was he supposed to know how to even make a friend when all he’s ever known is abuse?

It wasn’t cold out, the breeze warm and fragrant as it ruffled her hair. Still, Dahmer pulled her jacket tighter. The weather didn’t matter, she couldn’t seem to get warm for the life of her. She should go home, she knew that, but there were less questions in the park at 2am. 

Of course, it was nearly impossible to be alone anywhere in a city, no matter the effort she put into it.

“I’m fine,” she said softly, her tone a little emotionless. It was a lie, but most people never pressed past those two little words.
