Azrael barely cast a glance in the direction of the comment beyond eyeing Chance in the sort of chilling silence characteristic of a predatory animal studying prey. If any part of Az’s gentler consciousness remained right now, it might have been glad that Kellen had not been the one to walk through the door, but there seemed no sign of it on the surface.

The cold air inside the freezer might have been enough to dampen his rage for the time being, but it only barely held back the heat radiating from his core, the angel’s skin starting to break out in reddening blisters, a sign he was still very much at risk of burning through his vessel.

Puer stultum. Non debes venerunt. Vos scitis quod erant ‘non agitur.” he muttered, a cold smirk ghosting across his features, though his eyes remained emotionless.

If Azrael wasn’t waiting for someone to be foolish enough to free him, he might have taunted Chance instead of warning him. After all, as many people Chance might have killed, the boy could barely comprehend, much less dream of the body count Azrael had racked up in his existence before he fell. Chance was merely a serial killer, but Azrael had the genocides of multiple ancient civilizations to his name.

It took him a moment to comprehend what Az was saying, his grasp on that particular language hardly the strongest. Sure, he had heard it often enough as a child and Sera definitely spoke it, but it had never been important to him.

“The options seemed to be me or Kellen and I hardly think Seraphine would have appreciated me allowing her far too naive son to walk into a trap. I think she’d be a little more pissed if the kid died because of it.”

Not that it would really affect Chance on any emotional level.

The smirk on his step-father’s lips was all too familiar to him, it was a look he had seen in far too many photos his mother had taken since he had been a child. It was the same look he usually wore and it seemed terribly out of place on the fallen angel’s face.

“Careful, I do believe mother would be quite upset if you caught fire. She seems terribly fond of that face,” he mocked, wondering if he could find the right buttons to get the other to calm down. After all, his attempts at baiting Azrael had always rendered interesting results. Most of them hardly ever what anyone would expect. It was all he could really do to stall for time before someone better equipped to handle this shit show showed up.

The fact that he was banking on Kellen to come through was not lost on him either.
