“Longer than you can go without this,” she teased, matching his tone perfectly even though they both knew neither of them could stand up to the challenge for too long before they both cracked, since they were so completely entwined with each other that they’d been inseperable since they were kids.
“Doubt it since I can sleep a lot longer than you can,” he taunted, wiggling his eyebrows at her playfully. He never slept as long as he probably should but only because he preferred to spend his time with her.
Time for me to head to bed. Gotta be up in like 8 hours for work but I’ll be on after that and I am off on Monday!~
“ Why are you so stubborn?” He asked, groaning to himself he rubbed his face, turning to walk down the hallway, away from her room. He needed to breathe for a moment, walking out into the kitchen he leant up against the fridge, sliding down it to sit at the base on the floor with his head resting in his hands. He was holding back the tears, tears of frustration, tears of grief and of fear for his childrens safety. “ Why is this so hard? why is everything so fucking hard?” he whispered to himself, letting out a deep sigh then fell into a short sob. It was times like this he wished his own father was still around to lend some advice.
Caolinn waited until she heard him move into a different room of the house before she sliding her window open as quietly as she could. If he was so hellbent on forcing her to leave her home, he would damn sure have to find her first and she wasn’t about to make that easy.
Sneaking out was easy, she had been doing it since she was at least thirteen, so it wasn’t like she made much, if any, sound in doing so. The sound of him in tears was almost enough to make her pause, but not quite as she slipped out the window and into the woods.
Adam opened the door to her room, dragging her in. He let go of her, standing in the doorway, he crossed his arms. “ I am giving you the chance the pack something Caoilinn! If you’re going to be a brat then you can take nothing.” His words were purely frustration, he hated speaking to his daughter like that but she was so goddamn stubborn.
“Just le-leave me a-alone!” she screamed back, refusing to look at him with tears soaking her pale cheeks. She didn’t want to be around him at all right now and she wasn’t going to just do as he said either. She was tired of being treated like a child that couldn’t take care of herself.
“ Don’t-” Adam kept his grip on her arm, but he knew it wasn’t tight enough to hurt her. “ Don’t you lie like that Caoilinn, you know I wouldn’t hurt you, you damn idiot!” Adam hissed, pulling Cao down the hallway towards her room.
“ You’re being a fucking child, Caoilinn.”
Between his tone and choice of words, she was quickly falling apart. He could drag her to her room all he wanted, but that didn’t mean she was going to pack anything and definitely didn’t mean she was going anywhere with him.
“ Caoillinn!” Adam raised his voice, stern. “ Do you want them to kill you? us? Is that what you want?” Adam began to yell out of frustration with his daughter. “ If you stay here they will torture you!” Adam threw his hands up in the air, as if he was going to let her have her own way before grabbing her wrist to pull her down towards the hallway.
She immediately shied away when he rose his voice, a small, scared squeak escaping her lips. It was rare for him to get like that, but she still didn’t want to go.
“Y-you’re hurting me!” Caolinn yelped, struggling against his grip and digging her heels in as best as she could.
“ Unfortunately, you don’t get a choice Caoilinn.” Adam sighed, “ Your siblings are in their room packing a bag- You should too.” His voice went cold, he was hurting as much as she was. He couldn’t fight these beings off, if he could he wouldn’t be running.
“B-but I-I-I’m eighteen!” Legally, they couldn’t force her to go with them. Legally, she could stay all she wanted and they couldn’t do anything about it. It would literally be kidnapping for them to remove her by force.
“ It’ll all be okay, Cao-” He pulled his daughter in for a tight embrace, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. “ Your mother and I won’t let anything happen to you kids- but it’s not safe here for us anymore.” He let go of his daughter, looking around as if to make sure they were not being watched. “ We’re going to pack light and leave.” He whispered. Knowing he was leaving so much behind- so many memories of his childhood, his father. Possessions that will never be replaced.
Trembling, she curled against his chest, trying to focus on the sound of his heart beating. Any other time, it would be soothing to her, but today it was anything but.
“I…I’m not l-leaving,” she protested, refusing to run and abandon the only place she had ever known. Normally, she would do anything he asked of her, but not this.
