“I think I’d have to switch species entirely to throw Gwen off my scent.” Matt retorted, a small smile finally finding its way back onto his face.

“Guess I’m just kinda freaked out about suddenly finding out I have a whole bunch of family I didn’t know about and that things could have been a lot worse if Dad hadn’t gotten to me when he did.”

“Yeah, to like a skunk or something else to completely shake her.” He laughed, relaxing finally.

“I think I’d be more worried that our family seems to think letting any of them live with Chance is a good idea,” he replied, still trying to keep everything on more nonchalant side. “Seriously though, it’s kind of cool. I mean, you have a chance of finding out where you’re from genetically, all Gwen and I know is probably Australian heritage.”

“I’m kinda a little hit and miss with most things,” he admitted, looking a little embarrassed by the fact. “I mean, I can do some pretty cool shit with water, and my general spellcasting is alright, but my little brothers and my sister sort of got the cooler stuff. I can only do little bits of what they can do, and even then, half the time it’s a bit of a fluke.”

“Sounds kind of like my brother. He’s not great with spells and elements, but he’s more on the psychic side I guess you could say. Gran says he’s got a knack for reading people that no one else in the living family does. Doesn’t mean he’s always right though, thankfully.” He was, but she couldn’t bring herself to believe that.

His nose scrunched at that, but he refrained from making a comment on it. If it didn’t matter to her, there was little he could do to change her mind on it. He took another sip, letting the liquid linger a little longer to get a better grasp of the taste. “Not terrible, but I must admit, I still miss real wine.”

His expression slipped her notice as she sat, her posture both impeccable and comfortable look at the same time. “I have never had wine without blood in it.” Even her mother seldom touched wine without blood.

“You mean aside from a proxy for Britt?”

Anyone else and Jack might have tried to rein in the snark, but Chance had a long way to go before he’d ever earn that privilege. As it stood though, Jack had pieced together fragments of what his parents were like before he was born from various family members, although secondhand stories would never give a complete or unbiased picture, and a small part of Jack reluctantly acknowledged that understanding himself better in terms of his recovery meant that he needed to know the details of where he came from and why even if the truth made him feel physically sick and brought years of trauma back up to the surface.

“Hating you would imply that I care enough to have that particular emotion. Indifference to your continued existence and ability to breathe is more accurate.” he pointed out, barely a flicker of anything above annoyance crossing his face.

“And that feeling you have, the one that makes all of this matter to you? It’s called guilt, Chance, and if you feel that every day for the rest of your miserable life, then it’s the very least you deserve. Do you understand that?”

His jaw clenched at the mention of his own mother and something close to rage flickered over his expression for a moment. Later, when he wasn’t around his son, he’d take it out on someone unsuspecting, someone far more innocent than either one of them could ever possibly be. The jab was closer to something he would have said and the anger was replaced by his usual smirk, empty as a doll.

“Keep her name out of your mouth before you start actually sounding like me. That’s the opposite of what you want to be, right?”

It wasn’t what he came there for, but even he had limits on his control and if that was all he could do to take the edge off of wanting to smack the boy across his face, then he was going to take it.

“You weren’t the product of some twisted rape scene that everyone else seems to think. You weren’t unwanted or some mistake. Your mother is not some goddamn fantasy stand in for me. Your mother and I were together a lot longer than damn near anyone else realizes. Had your mother been what she was before shit got out of hand or even how she is now, you would have been planned.”

He didn’t buy the line on indifference, but he didn’t press on that. It wouldn’t get either one of them anywhere.

“I never said I felt bad.” He felt something, but it confused him more than anything. “And I wouldn’t say my life is miserable. For the record, if I were to want anything from you beyond this, it wouldn’t be for myself. Your mother deserves a chance to be a part of your life properly.”

It didn’t matter much if Jack refused to see him again after this, Manson would at least tell him how the boy was doing. It was one thing he could always count on his daughter for.

“As shit as I was as a parent, I never abandoned you by my own free will and I never intended to. I also never would have let anyone else lay a damn finger on you. Think however you want of me, but I care as much as I am physically capable of.”
