“I think most people would say that means she has questionable taste in men.” Trent chuckled, although he meant the comment entirely in jest and not as a judgement.

“I know, but I what I meant was that it’s not exactly commonplace. Most mortals are pretty harmless.”

“Women too,” she added, eyes rolling. She knew far too much about her auntie’s past trysts and she had no problem spilling all of the good details.

“I would hardly call a species destroying their own planet and building nuclear weapons harmless.”

“Yeah, but I’m betting your gran isn’t in her twenties anymore, right? Not a good look for someone my age.” he joked charmingly, his smile easily reaching his eyes.

“I think the only person even remotely as bad is my older brother, Cain, but he’s got nearly a decade on me, so he’s got a better excuse than I have.”

“I don’t know if she ever was in her twenties,” she giggled. The woman just struck her as the type that had been born old and rigid.

Adi fidgeted a little, trying not to come off so nervous. “So he’s like…thirty? Because you don’t look very old.”

It was encouraging that he was willing to at least give it a shot. If the kid had any family left, he deserved to know, and they deserved to know he’d survived too, and if not, then at least Sterling would have a safe place to stay with them if he wanted it.

“What if she’s far away? How will I get to her?” he finally asked, trying not to sound so painfully hopeless about it all. He wanted to say he was homesick, but that was too mild of a term.
