“Sometimes I think that actual animals understand us just fine, but they feel like being assholes.” There was another shrug before she took another sip of the drink. “I’ve known him since before I was immortal. He means well. He’s a mess, but he means well.”

“Maybe. The cat does seem to like doin’ whatever he damn well pleases,” he mused, knowing Pharaoh was likely curled up in one of the rooms used solely for medical purposes. “You do know that they say about good intentions and meanin’ well, right? There’s truth in that.”

mythsandmonsters:

“Absolutely. If we can help you, I promise that is exactly what we’ll do, no matter what it takes. You have my word on that, alright?”

Beth wouldn’t make any promises she wasn’t certain she couldn’t keep, knowing damn well how it felt to be let down by someone after putting your trust in them.

“Okay,” he mumbled, nodding more to himself than to her. He was trying his best to trust her, but every part of him still wanted to shift and run. Even if this was the best chance he had to find out what happened to his sister.

He couldn’t help but think it was going to be bad news. That Luna was gone too and he was going to be alone for the rest of his life. It was a lot to carry at such a young age and it often made him wish he hadn’t gotten out of the fire.

foxofthewildhunt:

“Alright, alright. But give me an insider tip. If I go the killing assholes and bad guys route will it make them” He gestured randomly up and around, “Less pissed off and not send another angry clawed lady to chew me out about it or worse?”

“Nope. You don’t know who has a chance to redeem themselves or otherwise tip the scales in the right direction. Besides, you only get one keres assigned to your killing spree and, lucky you, you got stuck with me and I, unlike my sisters, make it a point to actually meet the asshole I’m trailing.”

foxofthewildhunt:

“Fine. Just thought I’d ask.” He grabbed his beer off the table, label half removed already and started playing with it again, completely oblivious to the danger and the threats.“We could target bad people if that’d help make it less senseless. Might be fun to do that anyways. Go Dexter with it. His dark passenger was a bit less of a kill joy though.”

“I handle souls. I do not go around making corpses.” There was nothing he could do or say to tempt her into joining his little killing spree. The last thing she needed was Khaos on her ass for disturbing the balance is such a manner.

foxofthewildhunt:

He coughed and rubbed a hand across his throat. “You really weren’t lying about those talons were you?” He eyed her a little more cautiously now, “They’re cool. Even digging into my throat, maybe more cool then. You know. I’m not sure. But pretty awesome either way. Bet they can do serious damage, more than I could with a knife. You know. A mess if more fun to clean up when you helped make it.”

“I don’t kill senselessly,” she snapped before closing her eyes and focusing on getting her rage back to a concealable level. It didn’t do her any good to sit there in her true form. “And if you keep up with thinking you won’t have to face deeper consequences than dealing with me, you’re going to end up with a harpy dragging your ass to the furies.”

foxofthewildhunt:

“No spirits. Got it, boss.” He hissed in and his grin got tight, struggling to keep it up for that moment before she let up. “So I’ll stick to messy. Get some touristy poncho to keep off the blood. I think I could pull it off. No shades, no spirits just good old fashioned murder.”

Ava eased back slowly, ignoring the look she was getting from Trigger behind the bar. Leave it to the one hound that would take any issue to be the one bartending for the day. If Cord wouldn’t have pulled a gun for it, she would have raked those black claws over the wooden table top, but even she knew not to press on things the demon had worked hard to maintain. “Good.”

foxofthewildhunt:

“Damn. Alright. Humans it is. Chill.” The smile didn’t drop, but there was a flash of concern and a swell of energy called in that split second, an almost static hun in the air around him, but he pushed by and ignored it, used to working back from anger or fear and calming himself down, so he just held his hands up in mock surrender, looking straight at her, calm as anything, like there wasn’t a hand around his throat. “Anything else you got a burr up your ass about?“

Her talons sank into his skin a little, not quite enough to draw blood, but there would still be marks when she finally eased back. “Anything involving actual spirits are not something to be fucked with. That’s the complete fucking essence of a person,” she growled, not at all concerned with any energy fluctuation on his end. It was taking every bit of self restraint she had to keep from ripping his throat out and, for a moment, she sort of wished any of the other keres had been there to deal with him. He would have been dead the moment he said anything about using Shades.

foxofthewildhunt:

“No, now, that bits just messy. Which you know, in the right mood can be fun, jump in a puddle, play in mud, bleed a human like it’s your first day at the abattoir. It’s the bit that follows. That life force, that energy? Whoa girl! Now that’s the fun. If you know a shade you don’t like, or a whisp maybe, we can skip the messy, pure energy being right there, no clean up needed.”

She was across the table, fingers curling around his throat, and snarling in a flash. “If I ever see you fucking with Shades, I will put an end to you myself. Are. We. Clear?” It was one thing for him to kill, that she had no real issue with outside of it making her do more work. But messing with Shades, lost beings that just needed a little help, that was where she drew a very firm line.

mythsandmonsters:

“Near? You’re number one and you damn well know it.”

It wasn’t an exaggeration. Between his feelings for her and his loyalty to her family in general, he’d sworn to himself to protect her and do what he could to keep her happy.

It was enough to stain her cheeks a faint pink. He was the only person to have quite that effect on her and she knew he knew it.

“Flattery will only get you so far,” she reminded him, not bothering to lift her head to look at him. She knew him well enough to be able to picture his expression quite clearly.

foxofthewildhunt:

He clicked his tongue and pretended to be considering it. “Yeah, maybe I should just call it quits, go home and pet my cat.”  And then he started laughing. “Look, I’ve got thirty years of getting a personal smackdown every damn time it storms and I’ve done nothing wrong with that, I’ve helped people even. Let me have some goddamn fun and stop being such a downer.”

“And how, pray tell, is murdering people for absolutely no good reason fun?” The fact that calling it fun was something her grandson had once said to her was enough to make her cringe, but she didn’t let it show. Too many centuries of practice made keeping her composure easy.
