“Somebody has to.” he teased softly, his tone warm and affectionate in its sarcasm.

In truth, the wolf liked her company despite her general coldness to most people, and the lack of complicated emotions suited them both for different reasons, although Darius was sure that if either of them were a little more invested in the relationship than they liked to admit, it was probably him by a small margin.

“If you’re being paid to entertain me, you need a raise,” she teased in return, punctuating her words with a soft kiss.

It had taken her a long time to accept that he dealt with her out of his own free will and not because he worked for her father, but it had been hard in the start. She had always been worried that anything she confided would be repeated back when she was younger. But now…Now she was far more attached to Darius than she would ever willingly admit and she was beyond grateful that he never pressed on that subject.

“I know.” Cam murmured softly, nuzzling into her touch.

“I’m still angry at them for it, especially Tass. I don’t know if I can ever bring myself to forgive him for walking out on us, and especially on you.” he confessed, frowning a little at the pain the thought of it still brought up in him.

She gave a small, sad smile, her eyes still showing the depths of her hurt as she cupped his face in her hands. “Without you and Kat, I might have started to turn into my momma. I mean, I sort of get her a little better now, which might be the only good from this. She was there for me in a way she hadn’t been since I was little.”

It was obvious she was trying to find a silver lining in all of it, a reason, but that wasn’t enough to make it hurt less.

“You don’t have to forgive anyone for leaving.”

“Not got much of an interest in killing anyone unless they give me good reason to.” he answered with a shrug and a small laugh.

“And as for anyone not wanting me around, you’d be better off asking my mother about her reasons for that than me. Stopped trying to figure out her reasons for anything when I was still a kid.”

His laughter made her smile grow, dark eyes sparkling happily. She always did get too attached to people quickly and he was shaping up to be no different on that front.

“Pretty sure that’s her issue, not yours. I mean, when my mom has her episodes, she can get really cruel and it took me a long time to realize it was an issue with her and not because of me. I know it’s probably a different situation, but, still.”

deathandsleep:

He played comfortingly with Cayden’s curls, his sons hair almost as unruly as his own but not nearly as matted and tangled. It brought the barest of smiles to his chapped lips.

His thoughts turned to all the things he needed to do. He’d eaten enough to tide him over for now, so that was one less thing to worry about. Then, of course, he’d need to let the rest of his family know he’d returned.

“You need rest,” the boy finally mumbled, emotionally exhausted. He could only imagine how much worse his dad felt with literally being sleep. Not that Cay really wanted him to pass out for the next month or two.

deathandsleep:

“I won’t. Never again, I promise.”

Hypnos was fighting his exhaustion hard. If he didn’t have so much he needed to do and a distraught son to comfort, he would have easily slipped into a near-coma-like sleep until he regained enough of his strength to be at least semi-functional again. He couldn’t rest yet though. Not until he’d made things right.

The words helped, his breathing slowly beginning to even back out. He was still trying to convince himself that it was a dream, but there was always a little part of Cayden that had a hard time telling the difference. It wasn’t something he told people though.

“Okay..”
