“It makes things fine
enough. And I know that’s not great. It’s not even good, if we’re being
honest. But it’s the only way I can stay functioning and I can’t…” He trailed
off for a moment, searching for the words he needed to explain. When he spoke
again, his voice was quiet, but he knew she’d hear. “I know… I know she’s okay
now. And that even if she weren’t, she’d have Kat and Cam and all the kids and
just… everyone. I know that. But I can’t just… I can’t not be okay,
because I can’t put her through that. I don’t want her to have to try putting
together my broken pieces and I sure as hell don’t want her to learn they don’t
go back together, you know?” Lyri had been through so much already and he
couldn’t hurt her more. He could pretend to be alright. He done it well enough
before he died.
“Do you actually hear the words you’re saying? Lyri loves you, broken pieces and all. She wants to help you. She has been calling me every fucking day because she knows something is going on and it’s breaking her damn heart that you won’t let her in that last little bit. Jesus, boy, she won’t care that not all your pieces go back together because she knows that feeling. Her and Cam both do and you know Kat and Cam would love you just as much as she does if you gave them the chance to.” She sighed and shook her head, exasperated with him as usual. “Jasper, look, I know you were content when Simone was your only family, but you landed yourself a lot more of that than I think you were ever looking for and maybe, just maybe, it’s what you need.”
