He called Vivian, because he
didn’t know who else to call. His parents were out. Most hunters he knew would
kill August, too, so that left only his cousin, who told him not to die and
offered to bring in some reliable reinforcements. Normally he wouldn’t have
accepted, but desperate times and all. After that, he headed back out to the
living room, frowning when he saw August was still on the couch. “You’d be
better off in your bed. …do you want something to eat?”

“Moving hurts,” he mumbled, eyes clouded over with pain once more. The wounds looked closed enough on the outside, but the deeper parts hadn’t healed over quite as much yet and he had definitely made them a little worse. Besides, it was easier to eavesdrop from the couch and he needed to know what was going on. “Not hungry.”

pettythieveswithpotential:

“Yeah, but I died. And
that didn’t make you happy. It made you fucking miserable, which means that I
failed. Okay? I failed to make you happy. The only thing I needed to do was not
fucking die and I couldn’t manage that.”

“Yeah, we were a fucking mess and you fucking died, but you know what? I wouldn’t fucking trade the life I had with you for anything. Jesus christ, why can’t you understand that? You were fucking everything to me!” She hated the way her eyes burned with tears, hated everything about this situation. She just wanted him back, back to same piece of shit asshole she had shot. Back to the same frustrating man she had fallen in love with.

“Riiiight. So you’re not getting an adrenaline boost right now?” He countered, easily falling in step with her. It had been far too long since he had gotten into trouble with anyone and he was itching for fun.

“Is that anybody’s business?” she murmured, casting him a pointed look.

She was still keeping a surreptitious eye on the security guard as they put some distance between themselves and the store, her front not letting up until they were completely out of the guard’s line of sight before she stopped and looked the guy over.

“Look, what do you want? I mean, if you were gonna turn me in, you would have done it already, which must mean you want something, so fess up.”

He gave the most innocent smike when she finally turned to face him, but he knew she wasn’t buying it. Most of the fun people didn’t and the girls were always the quickest to call him out.

“You smell like trouble,” he replied, shrugging a little. “I like trouble.”

“Are you seriously that deluded? She didn’t fucking choose me. She chose all of you. Are you really still that fucking blind? She can’t stand being near me. She flinches if I get close to her. Do you really think she would have agreed to anything if I hadn’t had Sera?”

He didn’t like admitting it, but he knew Sera had been right when she said Britt had come for her. He had tried to pretend otherwise, but he could see it in his mom’s eyes. She wanted nothing to do with him.

“What, you really think bringing up you holding my daughter to ransom is really going to help your case? I’m not the deluded one here.”

Azrael wasn’t nearly as relenting as Britt or Sera had been, but then again, he’d been pushed to the sidelines in all decision-making in the first place and that was what had led to this.

“I’ll ask again. Why the fuck are you here?”

“The deal was her call to make. I didn’t force Seraphine into a blood pact. I never drugged her like Jericho did either. Before I took her the first time, she was exploding her own damn organs and no one seemed to notice, so don’t act like anyone has a box to stand on when it comes to her.”

He was getting worked up and that was the last thing he needed. Clenching his hands into tight fists, he forced himself to take a deep breath like he had been trying to at home to keep Sera from getting too stressed.

“To try to be the shitty voice of fucking reason. Go home. I don’t know why you think she chose anyone over you because that’s bullshit. I can’t take care of Sera if she’s stressing over this shit and I am not breaking that damn promise.”

He had picked up on the strangeness of her scent the moment she had walked in. It was piqued his curiosity, to say the least, but even he hadn’t expected that move.

“Subtle,” he remarked, laughter adding a slight lilt to the word.

“I’m sure I have no idea what it is you’re talking about,” she answered with a smirk, dropping a handful of necklaces and a couple of pairs of sunglasses into an empty paper soda cup and put the lid back on before turning and breezing past him toward the exit, deliberately making a show of looking like she was taking a sip as the security guard glanced in her direction.

“To tell you that your family fucking needs you.” It had seemed obvious to him, but he wasn’t the best judge on emotional situations. It was part of why no one wanted him anywhere near Az.

“Mother won’t eat because you left.” It was the closest to him admitting concern that he was going to get.

“Don’t pretend to care when you’re the reason for all of this. Isn’t this exactly what you always wanted, Chance? For her to pick you over me? I’d have thought you’d be fucking ecstatic at the prospect.” Azrael spat, ignoring the second comment because he couldn’t be sure whether Chance was just saying that to make him feel guilty.

Stealing was easy. Between shorting out the security camera covering that particular spot and making a rack of merchandise at the other end of the store collapse to draw away the attention of anyone out front, Ophelia had plenty of time to pick and choose whatever she wanted from the table full of sunglasses and jewellery. It wasn’t even like she didn’t have the money to pay for any of it. t was just a game, a fun way to see what exactly she could get away with that gave her a rush when she was bored.

Chance snorted, leaning against the doorframe with a look of disgust. Anger he could handle but he despised cowardice almost as much as weakness.

“Take your sorry ass home instead of running like Tassos’s cowardly ass,” he snapped, not bothering to try faking nice. He knew Az would never buy kindness coming from him anyway.

“You can swing at me all you damn well please but don’t fucking punish her.”

“Why are you here?”

If Chance thought he could just walk in, insult him and start calling the shots, the little shit was more deluded than he thought, especially since it was clear Chance didn’t actually understand the situation at hand and Az was pretty sure that Ava had made it clear to Britt that he wasn’t ready to talk even if she wanted to, and he certainly wasn’t going back just because Chance of all people told him to.

“To tell you that your family fucking needs you.” It had seemed obvious to him, but he wasn’t the best judge on emotional situations. It was part of why no one wanted him anywhere near Az.

He knew he wasn’t exactly a welcome sight but he didn’t really give a damn. Chance had left Sera with Manson, knowing that his daughter would, at the very least, welcome her. He had been to Ava’s old place in Detroit before, mostly to lay low when he had pissed people off, so it wasn’t like Az was really hidden. He did, at the very least, have the decency to knock before letting himself in. It was a start.

“Seriously? This shit hole? This is where you’re hiding out?”

Chance was just about the last person Azrael wanted to see, but he wasn’t at all surprised to see him and he was far too exhausted and depressed to bother getting angry beyond just sounding flatly annoyed at his presence.

“Come to gloat, have we?” he muttered, barely casting a glance in his stepson’s direction.

Chance snorted, leaning against the doorframe with a look of disgust. Anger he could handle but he despised cowardice almost as much as weakness.
