“You underestimate what my boy is capable of.” Chance knew better than anything that it wouldn’t be “a little damage” he would end up with. He had trained Jack for years in how to inflict the most damage and pain with a weapon. It wasn’t exactly something he wanted to be on the receiving end of. It was one thing for Sera to get rough with him, that was in fun. This…this wouldn’t be.

His eyes narrowed as he thought it over slowly. “You’re not telling them I was here. That is no one’s business.” He damn sure didn’t want anyone to think he had done anything even remotely good, no matter his reasons.

“No, I don’t. I’m fully aware of Jack’s abilities. Do you really believe I wouldn’t take into account all the things you taught him? That’s why it would be suitable justice for him to take back from you what you took from him. He knows he can’t kill you but you taught him how he can hurt you, so you’ve really only got yourself to blame on that front.”

Azrael wasn’t about to tell Chance that Jack had learned even more things to his advantage while his father was locked away, but he’d find out soon enough if Chance made the agreement.

“I won’t say a word to anyone, even your mother or Sera, but only if you agree to the terms I have set out. Otherwise, all deals are off.”

“The only thing I took from him was his damn mother and a dog. Both of which he fucking has now.”

The anger in his tone didn’t mask the unease in his eyes. He knew his son had inherited skills from Sera’s side. Things he had access to teachers for in the years Chance had been locked away. He wasn’t an idiot when it came to that. It made him want to tell Az he could shove the idea up his ass sideways.

Fine.” The word was little more than a snarl, but he didn’t see much other choice here.

“She doesn’t know I’m here.” His upper lip had curled into a familiar sneer. It was clear he didn’t like any of this, especially when it involved giving his step father an upper hand on anything.

“My son doesn’t need anything. He got his damn freedom. I can’t fucking go near him. That should be more than good enough,” he growled, his already thready control beginning to falter.

“He might have his freedom physically, but you messed that kid up more than you could possibly comprehend and I know for a fact that he’d take his shot at vengeance if he got the opportunity. All I’m saying is that you leave that door open for him. He deserves closure, even at the cost of you taking a little damage and Sera will agree with me on that.”

Azrael made it clear he wasn’t going to agree to any deal and go home unless that was on the table.

“Let the kid have his payback for what you did without repercussions toward him after, continue to keep your promise to Sera and your mother, don’t make any more threats about finding loopholes, and in return, I will go home and you can have free run at Jericho if Sera gives her consent for you to do so.”

He tried to hold onto pure rage, but the idea of being completely alone was enough to fill him with a sense of panic. He couldn’t be sure Sera would try to find him without the blood bond. With it, he could pretend. The illusion that she wanted to be there could be held onto. He didn’t want to face the reality otherwise.

“Sera won’t.” He was letting her keep the baby this time, letting her raise it. He was trying this time. “I chose her.” And it was one of the dumbest choices he had made, sure, but he was sticking to it no matter the cost.

“Then prove it. If you’re doing it for her, agree to the terms and make the deal.”

It actually felt good to have Chance backed into a corner for once, and this was probably the closest they’d actually ever come to having a vaguely civil conversation since Chance had been a child, even if it was fairly begrudging on both sides.

“I have one more condition to make. It’s about Jack. What you did to him is even worse than what you did to Sera, so if he decides he wants his pound of flesh from you, and Sera agrees, which I’m sure she will, you’ll let the kid take it.”

“If we go now, we might make the 6 o’clock.”

It wouldn’t be the first time he had gotten caught in a live chase story and he damn sure knew it wouldn’t be the last, not if he had anything to say about it. He had only really been arrested for that once but he had been 14, so he had only gotten a slap on the wrist. He learned after that to shift and run the first chance he got.

“Ambitious! I like it.” she mused with a laugh, getting outside into the sunshine.

“Only thing now is to decide who’s driving.”

“Wouldn’t be the first time. ‘Course last time it was a weird story of how is this car being driven by a wolf?” Which still amused him to this day.

“What kind of gentleman doesn’t let the lady decide?”

“Breaking Sera wasn’t about you. An added perk, but it was about her. She used to use that cute little ability of hers on me before she turned it on herself.” He had targeted his father’s other children a lot more than he had Az’s, but that was hardly worth mentioning. “I’m here aren’t I? She can’t go to Avalon’s because of me. Manson isn’t the best option for the same reason. Mother can hardly take care of someone when she can’t even take care of herself.”

Despite the annoyance in his tone, there was something in his eyes. Something almost like pain or desperation, but it was hard to tell with him. His jaw clenched, the muscles in his cheek twitching slightly before he forced the next words out. “They need you.”

Hearing Chance actually acknowledge the damage he’d caused and not in a way where he was gloating about it was unnerving, but Azrael wasn’t blind. He’d been around since before Chance was born and literally watching him grow up, so he recognized the closest Chance could physically get to sincerity when he saw it.

“I know, and I’m glad you finally realise that, because you always seemed to lack the understanding that if Sera could do that to you, you should be far more concerned with what I’m capable of and the fact that the only thing that ever protected you is her and your mother. See to it that you don’t give them cause to step aside because if you do, you have my word that I will see to it that you not only have to suffer retribution from every person you’ve ever hurt, but I will have Khaos dissolve your blood bond with Sera and you’ll spend the rest of your existence alone, in a box, in a location that only Khaos knows. Do you understand?”

“I would vastly prefer you
not fuck with my mother,” he answered flatly. Besides, he wasn’t entirely
certain that she would be harmless even in a coma. He knew better than to
underestimate her.

“Because you’re afraid of her or you’re even remotely worried about me?” She knew it was the first, but Avalon never could resist teasing him when the opportunity presented itself.

mythsandmonsters:

If there was one thing he’d inherited from either of his parents, it was trying to figure out the finer points of other peoples emotions when he felt like he was missing something and he didn’t understand what, and it frustrated and distressed the hell out of him.

She wanted to be alone but he was still there and it wasn’t helping her any. When they were younger, he had been her comfort, but now… Now he just made everything in her go to chaos. “I’m tired,” she grumbled, hoping it was just enough of a hint to make him go away until she felt like dealing with anyone.

“Easy to hotwire. Up for a police chase when they realize it’s missing?” He wiggled his brows suggestively and grinned. He needed the excitement.

“Think we can make the 9 o’clock news?”

She wondered just how much trouble this guy was willing to get into, especially since she was more than capable of disappearing without a trace if the heat got too close, and if that happened, he better have his own plans for covering his ass.

“If we go now, we might make the 6 o’clock.”

“And she’s free to see anyone she pleases almost whenever she wants. She has her own phone. I don’t give a damn about that so long as she comes home.” He didn’t have to worry about her running now. It took some of the edge off of his possessiveness. “She’s pregnant. Strict orders for no stress. Expect her a lot during this shit.” He wasn’t equipped to handle that.

Chance gave a curt nod at that. “He’s lucky I didn’t gut him when I found that shit out.” He didn’t have much moral stand ground, but he didn’t give a shit. “He made her lose one of the babies. He comes near her again and I’m going to see how long his body can survive without its fucking head.” It wasn’t an idle threat.

Azrael riled a little at the revelation that not only was Sera pregnant, but Jeri had apparently caused her to miscarry one of the babies, but he’d address that mess later once things were hammered out and agreed on here.

“Then that is something we both agree on for once,” Az admitted with a nod. “I might not like you, Chance. I might not be happy about the things you’ve done despite my best efforts to try to treat you as my own flesh and blood, but just so we’re both clear that all of this is for Sera’s benefit, I will meet you in the middle if you agree to defer to me when it comes to matters that affect her welfare. She is my daughter, and regardless of any mistakes made in the past, I have the right to be included in all of this, even if your mother insists on impulsively rushing into things without discussing it with me first. You owe me that if nothing else.”

“Breaking Sera wasn’t about you. An added perk, but it was about her. “Still haven’t found anyone thay could do lines like that mess. Cop that used to bust us both said she went and had a kid. Didn’t really feel like looking her up after that.” He had just been glad the kid wasn’t his.

If he seemed at all bothered at the idea of getting busted with her shoplifting,
it didn’t show. He was the poster child of casual nonchalance.

“Newer or classic mustang? Color don’t matter on classics. Those are worth the joyride just for the fact they have a higher value.”

“A ‘65 fastback, I think? Only got a brief look at it but she looks like someone’s kept her in good shape.”

The way Cian worded things did make her wonder if he was the kid’s father, but it was hardly important right now and she didn’t really care if he was the kind of guy that ran for the hills at the idea of being a dad.

“Easy to hotwire. Up for a police chase when they realize it’s missing?” He wiggled his brows suggestively and grinned. He needed the excitement.
