His jaw clenched at that. Trying to do it without an agreement was hard enough. He didn’t want to feel trapped into things he wasn’t capable of doing long term.

“I keep the ability to pawn her off on other family when I reach my limit. We both know I can’t handle that shit in longer stretches.” Not when he was already at the end of his rope there.

Dark eyes narrowed. “You’re willing to sell out your own damn son?” He was suspicious, but it was enticing to know he could get make Jericho pay for causing Sera to loose one of the babies.

“I would never deny you letting Sera be around us or anyone else in the family, regardless of your motives for doing so, so that I wholly agree to without question and I’m actually glad that you do have some ability to recognize when you need to step away.”

Under previous circumstances, Azrael would have never given up Jericho, but things had gotten to the point where the relationship between them was non-existent and neither seemed interested in rebuilding it.

“Jericho is the one who decided he was no longer my son when he cut me and your mother out of his life. He sealed it the moment he drugged Sera to stop her leaving him. I don’t forgive you for anything you did, and I know you don’t care about that anyway, but I know my daughter well enough that she wouldn’t stand in your way either if you were to go after him, so it’s entirely her call on whether he should be punished, not mine or your mothers.”

“And she’s free to see anyone she pleases almost whenever she wants. She has her own phone. I don’t give a damn about that so long as she comes home.” He didn’t have to worry about her running now. It took some of the edge off of his possessiveness. “She’s pregnant. Strict orders for no stress. Expect her a lot during this shit.” He wasn’t equipped to handle that.

Chance gave a curt nod at that. “He’s lucky I didn’t gut him when I found that shit out.” He didn’t have much moral stand ground, but he didn’t give a shit. “He made her lose one of the babies. He comes near her again and I’m going to see how long his body can survive without its fucking head.” It wasn’t an idle threat.

“Not since she dropped off the face of the earth. Heard she went all responsible.” Which still bugged him a little, mostly because she had never bothered to call him.

“Anything fast and red.”

“Sorry your friend ditched out on you to go straight. You must have been so bored since then?”

They were nearing the exit to the mall and almost completely home free, Ophelia still casting a cautious glance behind them just to be sure.

“Well, I don’t recall seeing any Ferrari’s in the parking lot when I came in, but there was a pretty cherry-looking Dodge Viper. There was a Mustang too but was metallic Midnight Black.”

“Still haven’t found anyone thay could do lines like that mess. Cop that used to bust us both said she went and had a kid. Didn’t really feel like looking her up after that.” He had just been glad the kid wasn’t his.

If he seemed at all bothered at the idea of getting busted with her shoplifting,
it didn’t show. He was the poster child of casual nonchalance.

“Newer or classic mustang? Color don’t matter on classics. Those are worth the joyride just for the fact they have a higher value.”

“My mother knew what she agreeing to,” he growled, bristling at that one. He hadn’t intended to go looking for loopholes regarding anything other than Jericho, so that was easier. “And I’ve been doing fine with Sera without needing that to be put in blood.”

Had he been at home, Chance would have been pacing or put his hand through a wall already. But this wasn’t the place. It wasn’t the time and it damn sure wasn’t helping.

“So it should really only be a formality to do so, shouldn’t it?”

Az could tell that Chance was getting dangerously agitated, and he wasn’t about to attempt to diffuse the situation, since the other was hardly in a position to hurt him, both in terms of his agreement and the sheer fact that Azrael couldn’t be injured quite so easily as Chance could.

“Alright, I’ll sweeten the deal. You let your mother out of killing again and I’ll rescind Jericho of being covered under the agreement you made with her. You want a punchbag, have one that deserves taking the punishment instead.”

His jaw clenched at that. Trying to do it without an agreement was hard enough. He didn’t want to feel trapped into things he wasn’t capable of doing long term.

“Depends on the damn terms.”

He would, at the very least, hear what Az had to say if only to tell him how far he could shove it. He had already agreed to two different sets of terms and he hadn’t been all that fond of the second, despite what he got out of them.

“Sera is off limits for a bargaining chip. Laying that out right now.”

“The terms of your agreements with Sera and your mother will remain almost entirely unchanged,” Azrael stated plainly, unfazed by Chance’s attempt to preemptively direct the discussion.

“In addition, you will not seek to find a loophole that negates those agreements, nor will you make threats, idle or otherwise, about doing so to myself or anyone else. You will continue to uphold taking care of Sera, and anyone else she tells you to, and if you care even the slightest amount about your mother, you won’t put her through making her kill again or the distress it would cause her will fall under you causing harm to her.”

“My mother knew what she agreeing to,” he growled, bristling at that one. He hadn’t intended to go looking for loopholes regarding anything other than Jericho, so that was easier. “And I’ve been doing fine with Sera without needing that to be put in blood.”

“Last trouble maker I ran with stole cars for fun.” Usually while doing lines with him, but he wasn’t sure just what kind of mischief she liked to be caught up in.

“Cian, if it matters.”

“Sounds like someone I should meet.” she shrugged casually, taking the statement as more of a suggestion than just at face value.

“Fia. So, Cian, you got any preference when it comes to horsepower?”

“Not since she dropped off the face of the earth. Heard she went all responsible.” Which still bugged him a little, mostly because she had never bothered to call him.

It took every bit of effort he had not to sneer at that. Clearly he was doing well enough without adding more damn restrictions to himself and he wasn’t going to concede easily.

“My hands are pretty damn tied, thanks,” he snapped, his restlessness showing through a little. With taking care of Sera, he hadn’t gone out hunting in days and he was cracking around the edges.

“Call it insurance.”

Az knew that getting Chance to agree to more restrictions wouldn’t be easy, but he figured the little shit owed him that much, considering how much pain and suffering he’d caused.

“If you really want me to go home to your mother, you damn well better let me lay down some terms of my own.”

“Depends on the damn terms.”

He would, at the very least, hear what Az had to say if only to tell him how far he could shove it. He had already agreed to two different sets of terms and he hadn’t been all that fond of the second, despite what he got out of them.

He shrugged. Nothing ever really ended well for him in the long run. He didn’t like having his hands tied. He didn’t like being forced to follow the rules. Especially when it meant his own kids were off limits completely.

“Sera’s…” He wanted to say fine, but she wasn’t. Not right now. “She was fine. I can’t handle her being fucking emotional. If you need proof that I’m fucking trying, she’s with Manson right now. I had to take her to that shit hole in Nevada and we both know I’m not permitted on that property. But I told you I would take care of her. Not my mother. You. All mother stipulated was that I can’t harm her without freely given consent. You said I had to take care of her.” He looked like the words had left a sour taste in his mouth, but it was the hardest he had ever tried. “And that part wasn’t in blood.”

The way Chance worded things never really helped anyone, but Azrael had to concede that small point at least, though it didn’t improve the matter much.

“Yeah, well maybe it should be, along with a few other things that were missed in previous negotiations.”

Azrael wasn’t trying to be difficult. If anything, all he wanted was to regain some validation in the whole shitstorm and be recognised for the efforts he had put in over the years.

It took every bit of effort he had not to sneer at that. Clearly he was doing well enough without adding more damn restrictions to himself and he wasn’t going to concede easily.

“The deal was her call to make. I didn’t force Seraphine into a blood pact. I never drugged her like Jericho did either. Before I took her the first time, she was exploding her own damn organs and no one seemed to notice, so don’t act like anyone has a box to stand on when it comes to her.”

He was getting worked up and that was the last thing he needed. Clenching his hands into tight fists, he forced himself to take a deep breath like he had been trying to at home to keep Sera from getting too stressed.

“To try to be the shitty voice of fucking reason. Go home. I don’t know why you think she chose anyone over you because that’s bullshit. I can’t take care of Sera if she’s stressing over this shit and I am not breaking that damn promise.”

Mistakes had been made the first time around, Azrael could admit to that, but those things had been worked through for the most part until Chance came back and ruined everything all over again.

“Maybe because in all of this, not once did your mother give a damn about what I thought before rushing in to give you more rope to hang yourself with. And in case you hadn’t noticed, none of this would be happening if she’d bothered to actually include me in making decisions that affect more than just her.”

He rolled his eyes at that, unable to stop himself. “You’ve always known she was impulsive. Besides, you don’t want to know what I would have made Seraphine do had mother not taken the deal.” None of it was pleasant.

He cocked his head to the side, silent for a moment.
For a few breaths, it would have been easy to pretend he was still twelve and just an asshole. “I know you hate me. I don’t really care about that. Never did.” He had, after all, wanted the hate. “But. And if you ever tell anyone I said this shit, I will find a fucking loophole, I like you with her more than I ever did my own father. At least you were fucking there for her.”

“Don’t try to threaten me, Chance. It won’t end well for you.” Az answered coldly, looking him square in the eye for the first time since he arrived.

“And for the record, I didn’t hate hate you. Not until I saw what you’d done to Sera after you were locked up. But do you know what I hated more, even after everything? The fact that no matter how hard I tried with you as a kid, no matter how much I treated you like my own flesh and blood, that didn’t make a damn bit of difference to you when you turned on your own. That’s what I hate about you, Chance. That you couldn’t even stick to one simple rule without having to bind it in blood, and now you expect me to trust you just because your hands are tied? You literally just said you’ll find a loophole if I say anything about what you just said, so if you want me to even begin to believe a word you say, you better start showing me some fucking respect for once in your life and actually try to prove what you say.”

He shrugged. Nothing ever really ended well for him in the long run. He didn’t like having his hands tied. He didn’t like being forced to follow the rules. Especially when it meant his own kids were off limits completely.

He gave the most innocent smile when she finally turned to face him, but he knew she wasn’t buying it. Most of the fun people didn’t and the girls were always the quickest to call him out.

“You smell like trouble,” he replied, shrugging a little. “I like trouble.”

Ophelia laughed at his answer. She had to admit, she liked his honesty, but she doubted he really had any idea just what kind of trouble he was trying to sniff out.

“Really? Think you can handle it?” she teased cockily.

“Last trouble maker I ran with stole cars for fun.” Usually while doing lines with him, but he wasn’t sure just what kind of mischief she liked to be caught up in.
