He frowned, feeling guilty despite her words. “But this is your bed,” he said, hesitating to lie down on it, even if she had another place to sleep. It was still her space and he felt like he was invading it. “The couch is good.”
She shook her head and crossed her arms, not caring enough to move her hair back from her face. “Rest. Bed better.” She wasn’t going to take no for answer, that much was obvious.
“We are just too pretty for God to let us die.” “Next time you want to stab me in the back, have the guts to do it to my face.” “They say never hit a man with a closed fist but it is, on occasion, hilarious.” “Dear Buddha, please bring me a pony and a plastic rocket.” “If anyone gets nosy, just … you know … shoot ‘em. — Politely.” “Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill ‘em right back!” “I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.” “Well, my time of not taking you seriously is coming to a middle.” “I aim to misbehave.” “Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!” “I’ve been under fire before. Well, I’ve been in a fire. Actually, I was fired.” “How did your brain even learn human speech?” “Man walks down the street in a hat like that, you know he’s not afraid of anything…” “I am a leaf on the wind; watch how I soar.” “Ten percent of nothin’ is, let me do the math here; nothin’ into nothin’, carry the nothin’…” “You know what the chain of command is? It’s the chain I go get and beat you with until you understand who’s in ruttin charge here.” “Time for some thrillin’ heroics.” “Also, I can kill you with my brain.” “No power in the ‘verse can stop me.” “I think you have a problem with your brain being missing.” “When you can’t run, you crawl. And when you can’t crawl, when you can’t do that— you find someone to carry you.”
“I love this moment so much I want to have sex with it.”
“This moment is so great I’d cheat on that other moment from before, marry this one and raise a family of little moments!”
“People aren’t chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling.”
“Do you want me to order you a clown?”
“Sex is for making babies and revenge”
“Too much ha-ha, pretty soon boo-hoo.”
“I miss you so much it hurts sometimes”
“Being such a mess that your friends don’t even ask for your help? That’s the bottom of the barrel.”
“Who the hell cares about what anyone else thinks? Just look into your heart and do whatever the hell makes you happy.”
“I’m changing you to a ‘yes’ because you’re feisty.”
“And I want you to know, if I had the choice of hanging out with anyone in the entire world, or sitting at home with you, eating a pizza, watching a crappy TV show, I’d choose you every time.”
“You seem unhappy. I like that.”
“But since your mother brought you into the world, I do have a message for her uterus. Bad uterus! Don’t do that anymore.”
“Oh, that’s adorable, you have a crush on yourself. I’d be careful, the guy you’re in love with is a douche.”
“I don’t dislike you. I nothing you.”
“Have you ever looked at yourself and wished you were different in every single way?”
“And if I seem uninterested, it’s only because I have no idea why you would like me”
“I hope you die in a violent death and bugs eat your corpse!”
“You kids use the word HATE so much that I have to find a new word to describe how I feel about others. Hmmmm, I mega-loathe you.”
“Nothing in this world worth having comes easy.”
“You make me want to kill myself and everybody around me.”
“Because nothing sucks more than feeling all alone, no matter how many people are around.”
“The truth is, it’s all of your memories, the joyful ones and the heartbreaking ones, that make up who you are as a person.”
“You’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame”
“Men don’t faint, We take unintended decisive naps.”
“I always assumed growing up was just something that happened as you got older… but it’s really something you have to choose to do.”
“Sometimes the only way to take a really good look at yourself is through someone else’s eyes.”
“I can’t believe I am marrying THEM.”
“I want marry whoever I want!”
“You’re not as bad as I imagined.”
“No. NO! NO! NO! I am NOT getting married to YOU!”
“If you touch me I swear you will not live to regret it.”
“This isn’t quite what I expected.”
“So… now what do we do?”
“I don’t think I could have dreamed of anyone better.”
“Let go of me!”
“You want me to marry THEM?”
“You can’t make me go through this.”
“I want to marry for love, not because I have to.”
“I don’t want to marry them. I want to marry you.”
“Take me away from this. I can’t do this.”
“Will I like them?”
“What do they look like?”
“You can’t keep me prisoner like this!”
“I don’t care about your precious alliance.”
“This is strictly business.”
“I will never love you.”
“Wow. I can’t believe I’m marrying them…”
“I think I fell in love with you anyway.”
“I would rather die.”
“You can’t make me love you.”
“I love someone else!”
“Perhaps we can make this work.”
“You’re not my type.”
“I’m nervous.”
“I don’t care if they like me or not.”
“This is stupid. I don’t want to do this.”
“So you just sold me off to the highest bidder…”
“I can’t believe how lucky I am.”
“I paid a good price for you.”
“You will have no children with me.”
“So, we’re doing this?”
“They are more magnificent than I could have possibly imagined.”
-rolls around on the dash- all my replies are done and in queue.
“If we don’t go dancing later, I hope you know that I’m going to be ridiculously disappointed.” It seemed like a waste if they didn’t go to at least one club like this.
“What kind of asshole do you take me for? This isn’t a sit around at home and watch shitty movies look,” he scoffed, eyes rolling as he began digging through numerous bags to find the right make up.
Being an energy conduit was a really bad lot when Mason’s job and life involved being around and occasionally taking down creatures and beings made of nothing but energy. One wrong step and boom. His granddad was right. It sure felt good to have that much power.
He’d had to test it out. It was an accident, definitely, of course. He hadn’t meant to fry that man. And he definitely hadn’t meant to slowly bleed that other one because he’d never absorbed a life before and slowly seemed better. He’d used his own lifeforce before to power a spell, to add an extra umpf when he needed to, and that always took time to recover from. Why hadn’t he just used someone elses? So much easier.
Mason tipped his bottle at them with a grin.
“That’s a good hello. Who taught you manners?” He took a drink and returned to peeling the label off of the beer.
“I’m not here to exchange pleasantries,” she replied, crossing her arms as she leaned back in the booth.
Ava knew the bar was one of the few places outside of her home that was completely safe to show her true form and she doubted he would just accept words. People on a power trip generally didn’t.
Her head tipped slightly, the illusions melting away to reveal something far more gaunt.
“You really need to learn some damn discretion, kid.”
“Maybe one’a these days we can marathon it.” He tilted his head, thinking it over. “I dunno? Maybe. But I think I’d have ta have a lot more control than I do righ’ now so probably not.”
“With plenty of food,” she added, grinning broadly at the idea of it all. “Why are you the coolest person ever? I think you should totally try to figure out how to do that because it would annoy scientist-y types.”
