alexi just like. genuinely cares about his son and it’s v strange but he doesn’t want to see ray make the same mistakes he made or worse.
Awwwww. Ray def got some of Ava’s worst traits so that’s like…totally valid on Lex’s part

Ray is just like “hahahaha nope” over the idea of anyone holding any sort of desire to genuinely protect him. Mostly because that means admitting he might actually need to be protected and he just… DOES NOT do that. At all. Too stubborn.
“Or maybe you’re not giving yourself enough credit.” The guy seemed pretty smart and wasn’t there something about how tragedy made you learn? A snort of laughter escaped him. “Okay, yeah, fair point.”
“See, you’re just giving me the benefit of the doubt here.” He knew he was, by no means, a smart man. But he did have a trusting heart and it was probably going to get him killed in the long run. “I think there’s only a set way to do it when you’re a kid and don’t really know how develop a bond naturally. Kids can just go up to each other like “we’re friends now” and it works. That doesn’t work with adults.”

She so would not believe him but it’s not his fault. She’s just been told that before only to be left so she has a really hard time believing it. It’s hella what she needs though and it scares her to think he might even remotely mean anything like that because she doesn’t want to care about him more than she already does.

She doesn’t see her life as a shit deal, honestly, but gods did she want Chase to be proud of her. She knew August was because, lbr, August is a soft ass kitten and had the lowest possible standards for everything but the safety of the kids. But Chase. Oh she wanted to make him proud so bad and she never wanted to break his heart.
“You’re making a lot of really good points today, aren’t you?” he said, laughing softly. “Well, that definitely seems like a solid starting point. You ever think about how weird it is that society doesn’t have a defined way to establish friendship, though?”
“I do that on rare occasion. Must be a good day for me.” It was easy to stand here and talk, but it made him ache around the edges. This was the sort of ease he had always wanted with Chase and this stranger looking so much like him hurt. “I think it’s because you can’t, you know, cheat on your friends.”

Honestly, knowing that would just make it SO MUCH HARDER for August because it would give him hope and the last thing he needs is hope in the main verse for him and Chase because he’s already such a sad kitten.
“Oh, yeah? Sounds like you’ve got a whole system worked out. So how does someone start moving up in those levels?”
“One has to have a system to survive anymore. Especially with the current government,” he teased, eyes crinkling a little when he smiled. “Generally with a first date for the significant other tier. Friend tier is harder to figure out a starting point.”
“Okay, okay. I can see your point there. Gotta make sure they’re really up for it all,” he conceded. “In that case, level eight seems a little high.”
“Level eight is for the really tragic shit. Level like three or four is when the secrets first start getting unlocked. Like the eyes, there’s a story for those and that’s a level four.”
