“It’s a rough situation all around, and if there was a better way, I’d take it, but this is the best we’ve got, alright? Let me do my job and get this kid in the best shape possible for us to be able to help him stay out of a cage and we’ll figure out the rest from there.”

Eli could sense Jeff’s distress over the whole thing and he sympathised, but he had to put the kid’s welfare above everything else right now.

“Does he have a name? I couldn’t get any response out of him when I was looking him over.”

Jeff shrugged as he tried to compose him. There was no use letting the pup seeing him in a rough shape when he was supposed to be looking out for these kids.

“If he does there’s a chance he won’t want to keep it. We didn’t really exchange pleasantries before I got him out of there because if they had found him like that, they would have killed him for what he did.”

mythsandmonsters:

“You can try, but I doubt you’ll get much of a response,” Eli answered, softening a little as it would do nobody any good, especially the kid if tempers frayed.

“Let me put this in the simplest terms. Sedating the kid and keeping him here under my care until I can get him stabilised enough to be treated for all his other issues is the best course of action because with the state he’s in, plus the fact he has killed someone, the courts would lock him up in a psych ward and he’d never see the light of day again. Do you understand what I’m saying? This is the only way to save him, if we can save him.”

“I’m not going to let him spend the rest of his life in a cage. I just. I fucking can’t.” He raked his hands through his hair a little roughly, not at all worried about the bit of blood that was still on his hands.

He knew that Eli was right, logically, but he wasn’t in the state of mind for logic right now. In all honesty, he just wanted to go home and curl up in his mother’s lap like a child, but he knew he was a little too old for that anymore.

mythsandmonsters:

“Jeff, this kid is way beyond any state of being legally fit to consent to anything by himself, okay? He’s so far out of it, if he was human, I’d have a legal obligation to have him sent straight to a psychiatric unit for treatment. That’s how bad things are for him right now.”

Eli didn’t have time to get into the finer points of legal requirements for overriding patient consent, but legality was an issue all on its own when the kid had already slaughtered someone anyway.

“I can’t even start treating any other potential conditions he has until I can bring him out of the catatonic state, and the only way to do that effectively and with the least risk is sedation with benzo’s. You want this kid saving, let me do my job. Once he’s stable enough, then we can worry about everything else.”

“Can I at least try to talk to him first? He killed someone and if that gets out, he’s fucked. I’m not losing another one of these kids, Eli.”

Every time a kid ended up not being able to be saved, it snapped something else in Jeff and made him that much more determined to get them all out. With the current state of things, he was already stressed, so worrying over this kid wasn’t helping any.

mythsandmonsters:

“We’ve got a couple of secure rooms we keep for pretty much this exact purpose. Well, for more human patients, usually, but it will be adequate for the time being. Besides, treatment of catatonic states require benzodiazepines anyway, given by IV, and they act as a sedative amongst other things so we can get a read on how far gone he is without him getting too out of hand.” Eli explained.

It was a far better idea that either sending him straight to Teddy and Layla and hoping for the best or confining him to a psychiatric unit like would normally be required if the kid was human.

“What good would sedating him do if he’s unresponsive? Besides, doesn’t he need to be able to consent and sign the paperwork to be kept for that sort of shit?”

He didn’t know a lot about procedures involving mental instability, but he was still pretty sure that any patient needed to be able to consent to treatment.

mythsandmonsters:

“Until we know what state this one is in, it’s probably for the best none of the others know just yet. It will only make it harder for them if he’s beyond help.”

Eli wasn’t exactly thrilled at the idea of putting the kid under the same roof as Teddy, given that Teddy wasn’t the most helpful at not encouraging harmful behaviour, but he trusted that Layla could rein him in if needed, at least until they could better assess whether the kid would be a threat to anyone else.

“In the meantime, it would be preferable to treat him under ICU conditions to prevent complications while we try to bring him out of the catatonic state.”

“Matt and Quinn don’t seem to be nearly as involved as Arcadia is in meeting the pups. The twins are even starting to get comfortable around her. Which, for the record, they’re too young to care and Sable, unless I’ve missed something, is still out for the count.”

Jeff gave him a skeptical look before looking around the hospital again.

“You got a cage here that I don’t know about? Because if he comes out swinging, people can get hurt.”

mythsandmonsters:

“He killed his handler? Well, that would explain a lot.” Eli nodded, letting out a sigh. The mutilation part was troubling, however. It said a lot more about what kind of mental state the kid would be in if and when he became lucid again, and Eli hoped it wouldn’t turn into a situation that involved heavy sedation and confining the kid for his own and others safety since that was what they were trying to free them from in the first place.

“Honestly, I’m not sure where would be best for him. Until he’s lucid again, we’ve got no way of telling if he’s feral or not, or how far gone he is. The best suggestion I can make right now is placing him with someone he can’t really cause any physical harm to, just in case.”

“They’re going to need to use dental records to identify that body. I’m honestly a little impressed. Never seen a shifter kill up close.” It was even more impressive that he seemed to have done it with his bare hands, but he was smart enough not to get too hyped in front of Eli. After all, Eli was still a doctor.

“My parents maybe? At least everyone there’s immortal and could handle it if he’s all attack mode.”

Jeff glanced down the hall and then back to Eli. “Arcadia’s here with Sable and I’d sort of appreciate her not finding out about this one quite yet. She’s a bit of a mess over seeing her younger brother yesterday and I don’t want to add to that.”

mythsandmonsters:

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays like that for a while, to be honest. He’s more or less catatonic right now, so I’d recommend at least treating him for that before we can really assess where he’s at mentally.” Eli explained, looking obviously concerned at the unusual fact that the kid was the one covered in blood, not Jeff.

“As for physically, he’s got a few recent injuries in the process of healing and signs of a lot of past ones, which isn’t surprising. What is surprising is that he doesn’t have an implant. Where did you find him?”

“Where would be the best place to take him for now? Because he can’t stay here given the scene I walked in on. Too much canon fodder.” The kid was definitely not safe for mortals to be around, that much he was willing to put money on.

“Huh. Didn’t expect that.” Jeff snorted, trying not to smile for once. “Standing over the mutilated remains of his handler. Kid mutilated the person badly enough that I couldn’t even tell you a gender.”

mythsandmonsters:

If he hadn’t been in an almost complete state of dissociation right now, telling Vaughn not to panic might have had the exact opposite effect and sent him into fight or flight mode. Instead, he sat in silence, staring off into nothing. It was clear that something in him had snapped. The state he’d left the corpse of his handler in wasn’t just an act of momentary aggression or self defence. It was sustained mutilation to the point of complete loss of control, blood and fragments of flesh still stuck to him, barely a clean spot anywhere on his body.

Once he was settled, Jeff left the room to let Eli examine him. He never stayed in the room for that, feeling that they deserved the right to privacy more than anyone he had ever met. Plus, he was used to using that time to get himself cleaned up after slaughtering people, so it was sort of a new one for him as well.

“Kid seems pretty out of it,” Jeff remarked once Eli was done and stepping back out of the room. “Don’t think he’ll talk to Ben.”

mythsandmonsters:

The red haze that had settled around Vaughn’s senses cut him off from trying to comprehend what was going on. He knew at least that the guy who’d appeared suddenly out of nowhere couldn’t be a hunter with a trick like that, since pretty much all hunters he knew of were human, and would have shot him on sight for what he’d done. On that basis alone, he didn’t question the suggestion of getting him away from the scene before anyone else discovered it.

First he made sure there was no around to witness him taking the kid out of there before simply grabbing his arm just firmly enough to tug him through the shadows. He figured the sudden change in location would be unsettling, but he was getting used to handling it. “Don’t panic, you’re safe and at a hospital,” was all he really said as he flipped on the lights. The room was kept dark and empty for a reason, giving Jeff easy access to the hospital and he pressed the call button to alert Eli that they were there.
