“I think she’s kinda freakin’ out? But if it helps, she’s probably gonna give it away ta someone in her family. She really ain’t the parentin’ type either. Least, she doesn’t seem ta think so anyway.” He couldn’t say if she was right or not on that call, didn’t feel like he had enough information to form an opinion.

“We ain’t getting her back, face it. She ain’t gonna want to go out stealing cars and shit anymore with a kid at home, even if she ain’t raising it,” he grumbled, shrugging a little. “Like I said, she won’t even text me back.”

“Your ma must have had a stomach made of steel.” Gypsy sniffed, a sympathetic tone to her voice that said she meant that as a compliment, as clumsy as it might come off.

It didn’t take her much to put together why Chay was drinking that stuff and seemed so damn maudlin about it. She knew better than to prod at him though if that was all he wanted to bring up about her.

“She was defini’ely somethin’,” he remarked, tossing back another shot. He didn’t offer her another one, not really wanting to wish more of this swill on her. Instead, he just downed the last two shots and turned the glasses upside down before slumping a little.

“Barely remember her, really.”

mythsandmonsters:

“Okay.”

That seemed to relax him just a little, knowing that Starla was at least aware that he had some pretty rigid boundaries about what he was willing to open up about with strangers.

The part about moms felt a little weird to him though. His mother had died not long after he was born and he’d never had anything close to another since. Until now, at least.

“Oh, in case you’re wondering why Manson called me of all people. I’m her aunt. And Angelo’s cousin. We’re sort of a weird mess of a family.”

She figured he could use an explanation of just where everyone pieced in so he had a foundation to build on when he started meeting more of the family. Especially since her and Manson were closer in age and it always felt too weird for Manson to actually call her aunt.

“Do you like gummy worms?”

mythsandmonsters:

“She worries about a lot of things.” he acknowledged, still a vague hint of confusion in his tone, but he was getting better at accepting people making a fuss and taking care of him.

Understandably, he wanted to know where he stood exactly in terms of how Starla might behave around him, since he was already aware that some people reacted like they had to walk on eggshells around him, and he didn’t really like that, or being treated too much like a kid.

“What did she tell you about me?”

“She’s a mom, it’s what moms do. But it comes from a place of love,” she answered, eyes rolling a little. Of course, she understood worrying, she did plenty of it over Trace before his medications got situated.

“Not much, really. Just that you grew up in a worse situation than she did and that you were on the shy side. She didn’t go into detail and I didn’t ask because that’s your business to tell, no one elses’.”

But she knew enough about how bad things were for Manson to know that meant a lot of abuse. More than anyone should ever have to face.

“I don’t need a babysitter.”

Quinn wasn’t trying to be rude. The battery on the cellphone Angelo had given him had died while he was asleep, since he was still getting used to remembering to put it on charge regularly, so he’d completely missed the text message Manson had sent him to let him know Starla was coming, and when wshe showed up, it had startled him more than anything, making him immediately defensive.

She wasn’t offended or anything and it showed when she simply moved towards the chair and settled herself down. She hadn’t meant to startle him or disturb the spirit that seemed attached to him, but she didn’t mention the ghost. There was no point in freaking him out.

“Company more than babysitter. She was worried you wouldn’t like being completely alone in the house.”

@mythsandmonsters

Manson had called her and Starla was hardly one to say no to family. Especially when there was newer members that needed a little help. So she came, all soft smiles and intimidating. It was a little impressive given their bloodline, honestly.

“Hi. You must be Quinn? Manson asked me to come hang out here with you because she got called into work for a little while. I’m Starla.”
