Blanket Forts

Have some feels~

She had never really left them before, not with anyone other than grandma or daddy and Chance was having a meltdown. He had never been in the house without his momma and he crawled to the door, sobbing. Tiny fists beat against the wood as he screamed for her, but she didn’t come back.

He was utter inconsolable. Oona had tried, but he had screamed harder and pushed her away. He didn’t understand why momma had to go and he didn’t like it.

It wasn’t until Azrael had scooped up from the floor did he stop trying to beat his way through the door. His hands were burning, but he didn’t care. He struggled against the angel’s grasp, coughing loudly as he had screamed his throat raw.

The living room had been turned into a blanket fort, cushions, pillows, and every blanket possible covering the entire room. The lighting inside was almost starry looking and the sheer wonderment was just enough to quiet the pitiful torrent of his tantrum.

It wasn’t until Az had situated them in the center of the fort did he really begin to settle and he held his already bruising hands up, sniffling pathetically. They hurt and he needed them to be kissed better because that’s what momma always did and she wasn’t there to do it.

Once the throbbing in his hands seemed to lessen, Chance curled against Az’s chest and yawned, exhausted from his tirade but refusing to be put down. For the moment, he felt safe and warm and it was almost as good as having his mother home.

The words drew a frown. “You’re awful young to be sleepin’ on park benches.” She hesitated with her next statement, not wanting to make him too uncomfortable, but saddened by the idea of anyone sleeping outside. “There’s an inn in town that I could get ya a room at if ya want? Even just for a night?”

He snorted at that. “Been on the streets since I was ten. Don’t need that big of a pity party.” Food he could handle, but he damn sure wasn’t about to let some stranger put him in a motel for the night. He hated sleeping in places like that because he always ended up crying himself to sleep. At least on the streets, he knew it would just be more of the same and not getting his hopes up at the mere idea of a warm blanket.

“Right.”

Danicka thought he was weird, but not necessarily in a bad way. Just maybe on the side that had a little bit of a twisted sense of humour, and she could appreciate that after what had happened to her. She looked a little puzzled at the bottle of pills though, wondering what exactly was in it.

“Um… Are you always in the habit of offering strange girls with tragic backstories drugs when you first meet them, or is this an isolated incident?

“Well, usually.” He grinned, shaking the bottle a little. If she hadn’t been human, he would have pulled more than one bottle with a long list of how many of each pill to mix, but she would only need half of one of these to be able to feel like she was hearing color.

“I mean, how do you make friends?”
