Starter Call: Gwen

“Well now that sounds interesting,” he answered, heading towards the coffee shop. “I promise not to let the conversation get too serious.”
“Oh you have no idea.” The sunglasses slid back into place at the words, partly for dramatic effect as he fell into step with the other. “Good idea. I’m definitely a crier and no one wants to see that mess.” It was a joke, really. He tended to shut down more than cry.
This bitch is home and ready to fuck shit up!
“Ah, good. I was afraid she’d struggle with the adjustment with how long she was alone.” he sighed, though the news she was doing well clearly made him happy, and that her brother had been taking care of her like Hypnos had hoped he would.
“She’s such a fragile little thing. I just wish she hadn’t been born into such… horrific circumstances. It’s good that she’s home now too. Now she can have the life I’ve wanted to give her since she came into being.”
“Cayden has always had a way with delicate ones, you know this,” he reminded him gently, the pride he had in their son obvious. “There is nothing that could tear him away from her and vice versa. He has become something of her comfort and sense of security, although she does not seem to like leaving your side either.”
Moros pressed a soft, chaste kiss to his lips to cut off his guilt. “All that matters is that you are both home where you belong.”
Thanatos looked a little confused for a second before the penny dropped that Philotes had lost track of time where his kids were concerned, then he smiled warmly again and gently corrected her.
“The kids are adults, Lot. They’ve got their own family now. With Eros and Kat, actually. I’ve got a whole gaggle of grandkids and great grandkids for you to meet.” he explained, finding it a touch ironic that she was even more out of the loop than he usually was.
“They’re all going to love you, sweets, and I know Eros has missed you too.”
She looked a little confused and upset for a moment before her expression broke into a wide, warm smile once more. “Eros finally found his way back to little Kat? She had missed something terrible before mother sent her up here to stay with Casey.”
“I’ve missed you all greatly,” she confessed, finally reaching her hand out to brush fingers over his arm. She had always required more physical contact that most of their siblings and it had annoyed some of the more violent ones, but she had learned, for the most part, to control herself.
“I’m sort of like an uncoordinated cat when not trying.” Chase had always told him he was such a cat after all. It had always been a fair point. “Again, see, that’s all level 8 stuff there.”
He laughed at the mental image. “I think I wanna see that. It sounds pretty great.” He nodded. “Fair enough. So you sure you wanna try this whole coffee thing?”
He beamed a little at that. “You should see me in the snow when I’m not in public.” It was a small hint but one subtle enough that most people wouldn’t pick up on. “Coffee only counts as entry level. I think I can handle it.”
“Well now I’m curious what it’s like when you’re not trying so hard.” He had a nice smile. A little guarded, but still nice. “Well that’s no way too live. You should do good things as often as you can, right?”
“I’m sort of like an uncoordinated cat when not trying.” Chase had always told him he was such a cat after all. It had always been a fair point. “Again, see, that’s all level 8 stuff there.”
“Another valid point. You really are on fire today.” He noticed the hesitation, brief as it was. He’d always been weirdly observant. “There’s a place not far from here, but are you sure you wanna go? We definitely don’t have to.”
“I’m trying. This is just maximum effort.” Another grin punctuated the joke, but his teeth never showed. The canines were just a little too pointed on the top and bottom, so he tried to keep those hidden. “Yeah. It’s just been a long while since I’ve done anything that might be good for me.”
“Am I pulling it off?” he asked, grinning at the other. “We have but for some reason we’re more willing to get fucked over romantically than by friends? Because adults still go out on dates with people they hardly know.” He paused a moment, because it was a stupid idea, but sometimes he followed through with those. “Speaking of, you wanna go grab some coffee or something?”
“Definitely.” He liked the way he smiled. It was more open, a little brighter, but infectious none the less. “Probably because it hurts more when it’s a friend because people always have the assumption that the dating might not work out?” He was only guessing really. The question had August pausing, hesitating for a moment. “Coffee sounds good.”
So the sad thing with this is the fact that Val does not deny it at all. She knows she wasn’t a great mother. She knows she’s still a walking disaster. She also knows she wouldn’t have been as bad had Kit not died. Because Kit balanced her out a lot more than most people realize. Because losing Kit nearly killed her. She blames Kit for how much of a mess she was because she couldn’t cope with his death but she takes the full blame for Casey. She can’t take full blame for Willow though because Willow loved Kit so much and she never got used to the hole in her own heart that losing her daddy had caused. But Val damn sure knows she didn’t make matters any better or easier.
