“If you’re being nice because you expect something out of it, are you really being nice at all? Because I think if that’s the case you’re doing it wrong.”
“The world isn’t nice so pretending? A little delusional, don’t you think?”
“That’s dumb. Even my dad stays places longer than that.” And Alexi had plenty of reasons to move around with the list of people who wanted him dead.
“Well good for him, we don’t.” They never had, even as kids. Even before their parents were killed. It was all they knew and Lissa would be damned if Devin was going to give up tracking the people that killed their parents for some house pet.
He ignored her obvious delight on the subject. “Why leave? What’s the point in not sticking around?”
“Is that a serious question? We’re nomadic. This is the longest we’ve stayed anywhere since I was ten and that means it’s time to go. Did the little kitty get attached? How sad for you.”
She considered the question for a moment before nodding. “I think my parents are the definition of hippies.” She’d always figured it came with the magic thing.
“I think you can get vaccinated for that.” The closest she knew to a hippy was probably Ben, but he was more like some sort of orgy fueled crazed raver than anything, so he probably didn’t count.
“Oh? And where is he going? Because he hadn’t mentioned leaving. And that seems worth mentioning.”
“See, I knew as much. He never tells his little fuck buddies that he’s not sticking around. Half of them don’t even get a goodbye. Guessing you were about to end up on that list.”
“Maybe not, but eventually one of them’s gotta stick, right? And then you’re stuck with someone you’ve been rude to for the rest of your lives.”
“None of them are going to stick.” Not while she was alive, she was making damn sure of that. “Now be a good little kitten and say goodbye because he’s leaving in a few days.”
“There’s no limit to the number of friends you can have. Just because you have some doesn’t mean you can’t have more.”
“There should be. too many people maxes out the emotional capacity anyone has.” Maybe she shouldn’t be taking advice from Chance, but at least it made sense.
