“I appreciate your concern, but I think there are probably better ways to spend your time.”

There was that self-depreciating air in his tone that had been so ever-present in recent months from a sense of exhaustion and acceptance that he was only waiting for the inevitability of someone catching up to him to deliver him to his death. It wasn’t the sound of someone ungrateful that at least one person cared enough to worry about him though, just some friendly advice that he was probably beyond help and that she shouldn’t waste her time to only have to grieve for him later.

“Some might agree with you, but I would still choose your company over anyone elses’.”

It bothered her to hear him talk down on himself, but she understood he was exhausted. Bridget took another step closer, needing to be near him. She knew he was mortal, that there really wasn’t anyway things could possibly end well, but that didn’t stop the way she felt when it came to him. 

“I wouldn’t be here if I wanted to be anywhere else.”

“I did and your mother made it very clear that she would kill me if I did it again. I’m trying to keep you alive. Learn from my mistakes and don’t fuck up.”

“You’re not her flesh and blood,” he pointed out, smirking a little because he knew Ava would never actually kill him

He winced at the words, knowing that was at least partially his fault. He hadn’t forced August into this relationship, but he wasn’t exactly offering a stable home. “What if keeping her ends up getting her killed?” he asked.

“Then you won’t have to deal with me anymore either,” he answered softly. If anything happened to the little girl in his arms, he wouldn’t be able to handle it emotionally, he could tell that much already.
