There was a coldness in Jeff’s words, the warmth and nearly human emotions draining from his features. He was letting the kid get a glimpse of what he really was at his core.
Cadi relaxed entirely when Jeff went cold, but she also moved forward and leaned against him like an obedient dog. She didn’t really want him to scare her brother. “You’re going spooky again.”
The words were enough snap him out of it, his expression warming again, but it took longer to reach his eyes.
