“He’s not good at that,” Chase agreed flatly. He sighed, running his hand through his hair again. “She’ll keep you guys safe. I’m not asking you to stay away forever. Just temporarily while I get everything sorted. Do you think I’d leave you with someone I didn’t trust to protect you all?”

“Since when do you trust shifters?” He gaze finally slid to Chase but it was a mistake. At his question, Del crossed the room and punched him hard enough to make him stumble.

“Boy, you pissin’ me off.” He should have known better than keep up on that around hunters. Just because Chase hadn’t killed him didn’t give Del that same freedom, especially if he let anyone else know.

The question clicked a few things into place in his mind, drawing a, “Huh,” from him and a quick glance in Del’s direction. It didn’t matter. It would have, once, but not now. He needed her to protect his family. It didn’t matter what she was. “August, Delia. Delia, August. I need you and the kids to go with her for a few days.”

Del growled at August’s comment, hands clenched into fists at her sides. “Boy, ain’t no one ever told you to keep your damn mouth shut?” The last thing she needed was for any hunter to find out about her.

“I’m not going with some unknown wolf,” the cat remarked, never breaking eye contact with the girl. He wasn’t about to put the lives of the kids in her hands when she was already growling at him.

“I mean it. I’m really bad at this shit, just like everything else I fuck up, and you’re the last person I’d ever want to end up hurting because I suck at relationships.”

Parker had never been good at being confident enough in his abilities to maintain anything close to a healthy relationship with anyone, especially his bad habit of self-sabotage out of fear of getting attached to anyone only to lose them like he had his parents and uncle.

“Yeah, well, it’s not like you’re going to be getting rid of me any time soon. I’m too stubborn to let you push me away,” she replied, wiping at her face to try to get rid of the evidence of the earlier tears. “Besides, I suck at being a functioning person, so.”

It didn’t matter to her how he saw himself. To Sable, Parker was the one that was always there for her, the one that made her feel the safest. She wasn’t about to let him out of her life over anything trivial or stupid.

“But that doesn’t mean you won’t do worse. And I’ve given you plenty of reason to want to do worse,” he pointed out.

“Seriously? I don’t even hiss at you when I’m shifted. I mean, do I really need to say the obvious, Chase?” He had done a good job at not saying, but he was tired and aching and wasn’t sure he cared anymore.
