mythsandmonsters:

“It’s my fault.”

Quinn was almost certain there was no way that Anya knew just how Isaac had gone feral in the first place since, aside from Isaac himself, which was an impossibility right now, he was the only one of them who had been there, and he hadn’t told anyone here yet.

“No, don’t you dare say that. Nothing that was done to any of you is your fault, you hear me? Whatever they did is on them, not you,” she replied, clearly upset that he would even begin to blame any of it on himself.

“C’mere, pup. You listen to me, okay? I know your daddy better than anyone. With what little I do know about what happened, I can promise you that you were what kept him fighting to hang on as long as he did. Without you, he wouldn’t have lasted as long as he did. Nothing that was done to him was your fault. Nothing that was done to you was your fault.”

“I know,” Quinn whimpered, feeling a little embarrassed at falling apart in front of someone he didn’t really know, even though she smelled familiar enough to him.

“It’s just… The last time I heard him speak was before…”

He faltered, clearly distressed by the memory.

“Before they took what was left of him away and left nothing but an animal behind.”

She offered him her hands as something to hold onto. She would have much preferred to hug him and wipe his tears away, but she didn’t know how badly he had been hurt.

“He’s trying to get to a place where he can really talk, but it’s not going to be all at once from what I was told. We just need to be patient with him, but he is trying because he wants to be here for you kids. You are why he agreed to be brought back like this.”

Below is a more in depth description of what happened to Sable.

Trigger Warnings for: Severe child abuse and torture.

Sable was being trained to track and hunt when Genesis and Salem were brought to her handler to hold. She had bonded fairly quickly with the pups and was under the assumption that they were going to be trained like her. While her handler wasn’t as cruel as some of the others, he wasn’t exactly a saint either.

Sable had overheard Caleb (her handler) telling Cadi’s handler (Marni) the fate of the twins and she grew protective. When Caleb went to actually feed them later that day, Sable attacked him as a way to try to protect the pups.

Salem and Genesis had to watch as Caleb beat Sable with a prybar until she was unconscious and bleeding on the ground.

He had fractured her skull in at least three places, broke all but maybe two ribs, one of the ribs punctured her left lung, both of her legs had been nearly shattered and there was decent damage done to her spine (but nothing sever enough to paralyze her or trigger her implant completely). There was also organ damage sustained from the beating. Had she been human, she would have died during the assault.

It wasn’t until Jeff and Kori had managed to get her to the ER did they learn that her implant HAD been damaged enough to leak, slowly beginning to poison the girl.

With the amount of damage, Sable had to be kept in a coma for a span of time to ensure her body rested. Her legs and arms had to be partially rebroken and set but she did require pins to be put in place to make sure they healed right.

She’s still being medicated to keep from shifting until her body is completely healed, but she is undergoing physical therapy to help her gain back as much motion as possible.

Hearing that word set him off crying, a few tears slipping down his cheeks as his breath shuddered out of him. Even before Isaac had died, there had been a couple of years previous to that when he’d lost all ability to speak, so Quinn hadn’t heard his fathers voice since he was around nine or ten years old, and that word in particular being the first word that returned to him stung Quinn in a way he couldn’t fully explain.

What resolve Anya had crumbled at the sight of her nephew’s tears and she crossed the room. She didn’t touch him, not yet, but she was within physical reach for him. “I didn’t mean to upset you, sweetie,” she apologized, wanting to soothe him but not know what to do or say to help.

mythsandmonsters:

That Isaac’s spirit could have been around since right after his death wasn’t even a remotely comforting thought. It meant that there was also the possibility that Isaac had witnessed the things they had done to Quinn in his place and that was upsetting to the pup on several levels.

“I don’t think anyone could rest after what they did to us.” he mumbled, the distant look in his eyes indicating he was referring more specifically to Isaac and himself than all of the other pups.

“I don’t know what you went through and I’m not going to pretend or lie. But I do know Isaac and I know he wanted to protect you and he did all he could to watch over you. So much so that he was able to give your little sister something to cling to when she was hurt. He loves you. He stayed with you to make sure you ended up safe.”

Anya paused for a moment, thinking of what she had overheard Arcadia saying earlier. “The only word he can actually manage to speak right now is the word safe.”

mythsandmonsters:

Confirmation that it was true only left him with more questions, and the answer to those would be much harder both to answer and to hear.

“How long was he around like that?” the pup asked, his bottom lip trembling a fraction as his emotions spiked again. It was one of the reasons he’d been avoiding seeing Isaac; that and being afraid of just how much of his father had actually come back.

“I don’t know, I don’t have experience with that sort of thing but I was told that his spirit hadn’t rested since he passed and that it wouldn’t rest because of how badly he wanted to be with you and your siblings.

She took a step forward, wanting to comfort him but not wanting to cross any lines.

mythsandmonsters:

“Did Sable really see him when she was flatlinin’?”

He already knew the answer. It had sent him into meltdown the day Sable told him about it, but hearing someone else confirm it who had actually spoken to Isaac since he was brought back might help him finally accept and process it.

“Your sister asked him the same thing and he told her yes. The woman that brought her back, she said her daughter had seen his spirit around when she came to hang out with you, so I think he had been trying to watch over you as best as he could,” she explained, her tone soft but honest. She didn’t want to upset him further, but he needed to know the truth.

“He loves you, all of you, and there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for you kids.”

mythsandmonsters:

“You mean if he came back feral…”

The last word stuck in Quinn’s throat slightly, giving away that he’d seen his father in that state and that it was one of the things that made his trauma far worse than some of the others.

“Like before he died.”

She nodded, seeing no point in lying to the kid. It had been a real risk but it was one she had been willing to take.

“Yeah, but he didn’t. He was scared at first, but he never tried to attack anyone there and once he got wind of my scent, it was easy to get him here. Once he realized what was going on, he cried.”
