Isaac looked down at her and nodded to show he understood why she’d be cautious. Even Quinn had been afraid to step foot in the room out of fear that the animal he was before he died was the thing that had come back, not the person he was trying to relearn how to be.

“Safe,” he repeated, looking a little surprised himself at hearing the word come out of his mouth, but if that was all he could manage, for now, that was one of the best things that he could have possibly said, and that was important to him.

She nodded in return at the word and snuggled back down against his chest. “Safe.”

It was more than just the word, she understood the importance of it. Honestly, it was probably the best thing he could have found his voice enough to say to her.

“Genesis is going to love you. Maybe more than she loves me and Vaughn,” she offered, a slight giggle following. Of all of the kids, she had seemed to adapt the fast and it was a relief to Cadi to say the least.

“Normally by means a little less of a legal grey area, but what the hell, you’ve caught me in a morally questionable mood.”

Before, she wouldn’t have even dreamed of accepting illicit substances from boys she’d just met, but having survived somewhat of a near-death experience, it had given her an interesting new outlook on life that loosened up an experimental streak in her.

“Got anywhere a little less public to go to take these? Not really the sort of trip you want to have around people that can call the cops.”

He would have offered to take her home with him, but he doubted Tal’s family would appreciate him bringing home a random human girl. He knew they wouldn’t be happy about him giving her illegal drugs either.

mythsandmonsters:

Isaac was content to just sit there and hold onto her for as long as she wanted or needed him to, and if he was honest, he needed the physical contact and reassurance just as much as she did.

He’d missed so much, not just after his death, but in all the time after the pups were taken from him in the first place and he was sure as hell determined to make up for lost time.

Eventually, the sobs faded to silent tears, but she stayed right where she was. It wasn’t going to be easy to explain to Vaughn when she left the room with clear evidence of having been crying, but she would manage.

“The pups want to meet you too but I… I had to make sure you were safe for them to see first,” she finally confessed, her voice a little raw and almost painfully small.

mythsandmonsters:

Even in a weakened state, Isaac was still strong enough to pretty much hoist his child into his lap to soothe her properly, letting her snuggle into his chest like she was still the tiny little thing she had been the last time he’d gotten to hold her like this.

“Safe.” he managed to murmur, though he wasn’t even aware that he’d spoken out loud, all his focus on her. There was so much more he wanted to say, but there would be plenty of time for that. For now, he just needed to reconnect with them and the world he’d been absent from for so long.

She didn’t even notice that she had been moved as she curled against him like she was still a toddler. The word wasn’t lost on her but Cadi was too worked up to respond to it properly.

By the time she had cried herself out, she was just plain exhausted. She wanted to just sleep and not feel anything for a little while. But, at the same time, she didn’t really want to pull away from her dad. Not when she knew now that there was no way she was ever going to call him anything but that.

mythsandmonsters:

Isaac panicked when Cadi broke down, forgetting all caution at the moment to act on his instinct as a father. He moved forward, wrapping his arms around her and giving her a hug, stroking her hair and making soothing noises as best as he was able.

It was the first time he’d held any of his kids since they were born, but the instinct to comfort and protect them was still as strong as ever, and now he had the chance to actually do something about it.

The moment Isaac’s arms were around her, Cadi all but collapsed against him. She was so tired of being strong, of feeling like she had to keep things together and take care of everyone. She was still a child herself and she needed this, needed to feel safe and loved and protected.

With a soft hiccuping whimper, she buried her face against her dad’s chest as she clung to him, trying to memorize the way he smelled. It wasn’t very hard when her and the other pups carried hints of it already, but it was still different enough that she needed to focus on it.

mythsandmonsters:

Isaac looked relieved that Sable had hung on because he’d told her to. It made him feel so much less helpless over not being able to physically help the others.

The older wolf could smell the distress on her and he was desperate to comfort the girl but he didn’t know if she would be comfortable letting him, so he carefully curled his fingers around her hand and squeezed gently, letting her pull away if it was too much.

That small gesture was enough to tip Cadi over the edge and she couldn’t stop the tears now. All she had wanted as a child was someone to protect her and the others from the horrors they had gone through and now she knew he would have if he had been able to. It was a lot to take in.

mythsandmonsters:

Isaac nodded, trying to keep from bursting into tears completely at the sudden rush of emotion that was overcoming him.

He picked up the pen again and attempted to write something else, needing a couple of tries this time to get it looking right to him.

“Safe”

He tapped the word with his finger and grunted slightly for emphasis as he showed her, trying to show that he had been doing what he could to protect all of them even after he’d died.

She nodded at the word and closed her eyes to the burn of tears threatening to overwhelm her entirely.

“She..she said it gave her more of a will to fight,” she mumbled, trying to keep her voice steady as she spoke. “But we’re safe now. I-I have custody of her and two of the little little ones.”

Cadi was honestly grateful that Chance’s grandmother had given her custody of Sable and the twins, especially after everything they had gone through. Just the thought of it was enough to make a few tears spill over.

mythsandmonsters:

He gave her a grateful nod as he took the bad, struggling a little with uncapping the pen and articulating it enough to scratch a few lines onto the paper with all the effort and concentration he could muster before he looked satisfied with the results.

Turning the pad around, he showed her what it said, the lettering shaky and very childlike in their execution, but the word legible at least, partly because it was only two letters long. Isaac smiled apologetically again, a few tears or relief making his eyes glossy as he held up the word “Hi”.

It was the simplest thing, a single word, but the way he smiled and the tears in his eyes made her lower lip tremble. Hesitantly, she touched his hand with shaking fingers, unsure of what else to do. To say she was a little overwhelmed was a touch of an understatement, but if he could make an effort, so could she.

“You were there with Sable in the hospital, weren’t you,” it wasn’t a question, but she knew her sister needed a confirmation and she wanted to be able to tell her the truth.

mythsandmonsters:

Isaac smiled when she said that, but there was a sadness to it. He remembered seeing that little girl lying on a table in the hospital while doctors fought to restart her heart and he’d told her she needed to stay with her siblings. It had upset him so much to see that.

He let out a heavy sigh that shuddered a little with emotion, getting slightly frustrated that he couldn’t speak, until he spotted a notepad on the table across the room. He wasn’t sure if he’d be able to write either, but it might be easier to try than trying to force out words that wouldn’t come, so he gestured toward it, his expression turning urgent in hoping he could get the message across for her to get it for him.

She frowned at the sudden shift and tried her hardest not to jump. She didn’t want to be afraid of him of all people. Especially when he didn’t smell like death the way some of the other people in her life did.

But when she did finally catch on, she fetched the pad and one of the pens near it before taking it back to him, completely still as she held them out to him. She wasn’t sure she could handle him touching her just yet.

mythsandmonsters:

When he saw her hesitation, it broke his heart a little but he understood. Aside from Quinn, most of his kids hadn’t seen him since they were barely more than a few days or weeks old, so they probably didn’t even recognise him by scent, but he recognised all of them regardless.

He leaned forward and patted the bed, making it more obvious he’d like for her to come sit by him, but giving her the option to remain out of arms reach enough to escape if she felt she needed to.

Her fingers twisted in Vaughn’s shirt before she dipped her head enough to breathe in the scent on it. It was her comfort much the same way she had become Genesis’s.

Slowly, she crossed the room and perched on the very edge of the bed, still out of reach, but she was trying. There were just too many emotions swirling around her head at the moment.

“Sable looks like you,” she finally managed to get out, unable to really look at him for longer than a moment or two. Genesis and Salem bore a resemblance to him as well, but not as much as Sable did.
