rustandglass:

“I believe you.”

Grabbing his leather jacket, he shrugged into it, checking the pockets to make sure he had his keys, turning back one last time to flash Lissa a smile before he ducked out of the room, hoping to at least dodge running into her brother on the way out.

She watched him go before rolling onto her back, already bored. She knew Devin was home and awake, she could hear him banging around in the kitchen, clearly already in a mood, but at least he hadn’t confronted Cael this time.

It was enough to make her fall back asleep, relieved to avoid a fight as she waited for him to come back.

rustandglass:

“You always make it harder,” Cael laughed without missing a beat, leaning forward to steal one more kiss then getting up from the bed.

“Seriously though, I’ll try to be back soon, okay? But I’ll text you if I get held up.”

“That’s the point,” she replied, pouting up at him but not begging him to stay. It was rare for her to do that.

“I’ll try to keep myself out of trouble but I make no promises.”

rustandglass:

A broad grin spread across Cael’s face at the demand.

“Of course, that’s a given. As is coffee,” he shrugged casually, letting his fingertips trail lightly over the curve of Lissa’s ass, still tempted to get back in bed and finding himself more and more reluctant to leave the longer he waited, despite knowing the urgency of why he had to.

She wiggled her ass a little at his touch, letting the sheet slip lower to expose more skin. She could smell the hesitation on him, the desire, and it made her feel warm in the pit of her stomach.

“Go handle your business before I start making it harder for you to go.”

He knew she’d been working up to asking him about the scar on his shoulder. The one that cut a straight, white track for almost three inches across the outer curve of it.

“First near miss, a week before I turned Seventeen. Bullet grazed just enough to break the skin. Didn’t get it stitched up for two days.”

Her eyes rolled when he told her how long he had gone without medical attention for the injury but she was hardly surprised. It fit with just how stubborn he was. Still, her touch was light as she traced over the scar tissue.

“I’m learning how to do stitches so if anything like that happens again, I can fix it.” Not that she would willingly trust herself with it. She was awful at it.

rustandglass:

“By all means.”

As often as they hooked up and as affectionate as they’d become with each other, they’d never really gotten close to approaching defining their relationship any further, a one night stand turning to several, turning to something between a regular booty call and friends with benefits, but the arrangement seemed to work out pretty well for them so there was no need to upset the status quo any time soon.

“You want me to bring you anything in particular? Other than my naked ass?”

“I’ll hold you to other things too.”

The words were punctuated with a purr and a slight wiggle of her ass for emphasis. Devin had been on her about just how often she smelled like Cael, something in his scent bothered him, but she didn’t care. She slept better when he was in the same bed as her.

Bacon. Can’t have rough sex on an empty stomach.”

rustandglass:

It was hard not to just say fuck it, take all his clothes off again and dive straight back into bed with her, but Cael knew that if he didn’t chase up the lead pretty much right away, it could slip through his hands and the trail would go cold, and he couldn’t risk that happening when he was so close to having something concrete to prove that his father was murdered.

He leaned over, pressing a trail of soft kisses up the track of Lissa’s spine before nuzzling the side of her neck, murmuring “Promise” in her ear with a growl.

The feel of his lips along her spine was enough to make her shiver but oh god, the way he growled made her toes curl. It was enough to make her think he would make a good shifter, a thought that had crossed her mind a couple of times, but one she wasn’t really planning to act on.

“I’m holding you to it.”
