“Oregon’s nice,” he said. “Lots of trees, lots of rain.” He felt more at home in forests, but he tried to travel to as many different places as he could. Cities needed his kind of magic more than other places. “I imagine Canada was similarly beautiful.”

“Wasn’t really there to site-see,” she mumbled, rubbing the back of her arm a little. At that point, she had been basically running for her life and mostly shifted the entire time.

He gripped Lissa’s hips roughly, matching her rhythm with fevered enthusiasm. After a few moments, he reached over and grabbed one of the bags of food, fishing out a strip of bacon and dangling it teasingly in front of her with a smirk on his face.

With a growl, she leaned forward and snapped her teeth, trying to get the bacon without loosing her rhythm. She should have known he was going to pull something like that, but she didn’t care. Later, she’d give him shit for it, but now…now she just wanted him and the damn bacon.

For Your Consideration

For @ofviolentdeath

The quiet was something Rhys had to adjust to, constantly. Life was loud – young child, family, all manner of people in and out left the nights empty. Colin and the others had gone into the city – plans to open up a brewery or something to that effect. And Eugenia was tucked away and snoring softly. It was eleven, and Rhys wandered out to the porch with a beer and a head full of noises to combat reality’s lack thereof.

Sitting down on the railing, he watched fireflies – the few still clinging to hope they’d find mates – flicker in the yard. One, two… ten, thirty… it passed the time. But to his surprise, he saw someone approaching. In the dark he went off of every other sense. Footfall, smell… familiar but aged in memory. Rising slowly, the werewolf walked to the gap in the railings, and leaned against the post.

“Long time no see… you visitin’, or runnin’ from somethin’ again?”

His dad had been getting bad again and, honestly, he was at his limit with being able to handle the mess. A small part of him wanted to just lock the demon in some sort of alternate dimension for a time, but Chay knew that would never work the way he wanted it to. His dad would simply go back to his old habits the moment he was allowed.

So he bolted, left Grayson slumped over in Sorin’s office, half out of his mind, and ran. He didn’t even bother to call home and let Cord know what was going on, he knew his aunt would figure it out.

He hadn’t been thinking much about where he was going and it wasn’t until he was basically there did the familiarity really hit him.

“When am I no’ runnin’ from some’in’?” he replied, tone nearly flat. “Can’ say I know where I’m runnin’ to this time so pro’lal’ jus’ visi’in’.”

It was rare for any of the extended family to bring anyone else around these days, so Cord was a little on edge about Vega bringing a human. It wasn’t really the kid that was the problem, although there were issues with that in itself, it was more that he wasn’t sure he trusted some of the hounds or even some of the others that lived on the property. Vega had given the heads up that the boy didn’t know exactly where she was bringing him or who and what ran the place.

Still, it meant a lot to his niece and he could try to keep things as normal passing as possible.

“You must be Rabbit.”

“I suppose so,” Zeke shrugged, though the doubtful look remained in his eyes. “You were just a kid when that happened though, right? Not sure how easy it’s gonna be to make that jump and adapt when I’m already an adult and supposed to have my shit together.”

Gwen scooted a little closer and rested her chin on the arm of the couch. She had more canine mannerisms than her brother but she never seemed to realize how unsettling that could be to others. “I watched Jeff kill my birth parents. I was really little and they had hurt me really bad. So he came and got me and Tucker, brought us here to Oli. Then he found Matt. And then Quinn. It took him awhile to get his life figured out and when he did, he started rescuing us kids. Chance took longer to get his shit together. I don’t think there’s a set time to get things together, especially when you grew up being told to do bad things or getting hurt for not doing them. But I know you’re not bad because you didn’t tell anyone when Jeff went to get Sable and Genesis, and Salem. You could have, but you didn’t.”

She was rambling, she didn’t mean to, but she couldn’t seem to stop. But she was aware enough to give him a small, sheepish grin.

“I think what I’m trying to say is that you’ve more than earned the chance to get to figure out who you want to be and since you’ve helped Matty’s brother and sisters, the least I could do is offer to help because you need a friend.”
