“He a demon too?”

Erys saw no point in covering up the fact Grayson had revealed what he was to her, not when he’d been so flippant about it. It was still something that stretched Erys’s belief system and tested its limits, but she figured that she was handling it surprisingly well, all things considered.

Her question caught him off guard and Chayton couldn’t even try to hide the shock. But he did opt for laughing it off and trying to pass it off as his dad just being too stoned to make sense.

“Da’s a junkie. No’ sure wha’ he told ya bu’ demon? An’ ya believed him?”

“Looks like it’s winner, winner, chicken dinner then, doesn’t it,” she purred, putting her foot down, the vehicle’s engine growling in response as it sped toward the nearest freeway.

“You did not seriously just say that,” he laughed, shaking his head over just how ridiculously out of place it sounded in the given conversation. It sort of added to her charm in a weird little way.

“That’s a long time…”

It didn’t escape Rabbit’s notice that the latest of the dates Cord mentioned was still over a century ago, reminding him of the fact that he was likely the only human there, and that it meant that Cord was something other, though Vega hadn’t exactly been forthcoming in telling him what, and it wasn’t the most comforting thought by any means, though he didn’t voice his discomfort for the time being.

The use of magic only compounded the issue, making Rabbit even quieter to the point of just nodding and muttering in acknowledgement as he focused all his energy on not freaking out.

“What all else does it keep out? There weren’t any Infected back then.”

“I’m an old man.”

It wasn’t true, not really. Sure, he was a man today, but other days he was a she and the kids still called him mom no matter what form he wore. He could literally feel the emotions coming off of the boy in waves and he was silently cursing himself. Most cases, being upfront put a person at ease, but he was beginning to see why Vega had wanted to keep things downplayed.

“It used to just keep out humans mostly. Most hunters back in the day were human and I was harboring shifters, tricksters, witches, fallen angels, that sort. Still do, really, take in kids and place them with the right people. People that can take care of ‘em proper. Also kept out most angels and demons. There were exceptions, lower levels, fallen, exiled, but the higher ups? Wasn’t risking that shit.”

Cord paused, studying Rabbit for a moment. It was tempting to ease his anxiousness, but he didn’t feel right doing it without consent and he had no idea how to tell the kid he could actually do that.

“Not sure what that says about either of us,” he mumbled, taking to wringing his hands to try to dissipate a little of the agitation he felt.

There was still doubt in his eyes, but at least he actually looked at her, him making eye contact when feeling vulnerable a recent and significant step in the progress he’d made, even if he didn’t think it was.

“I don’t know how to make things easier, and it’s super frustrating, but I want to. I just don’t know how.”

“Maybe it just shows that someone somewhere had the right idea to send me to you? Because I’m too stubborn to walk away?” she offered, trying to lighten the mood even a little.

Vega offered him a soft, sweet smile and held her hands out, giving him the option to have something physical to hang on to while he tried to sort himself back out.

“We’ll figure it out along the way.”
