I will not censor my muse,

…but I do respect you as a writer, and will discuss plot points with you (hopefully) before censoring becomes an issue.

There’s a lot of stuff going on both sides of this debate, and both sides have some fair points, and some not fair points. I’m not going to get into which I agree with and which I don’t so instead this is a different kind of PSA. A respect PSA; a PSA that tells you that I respect you, BUT I demand the same respect.

Some writers out there write problematic characters. Some prefer gritty, horror, violent threads. There are many writers out there that write very powerful characters (from gods to beings who span millennia). I am one of those writers. I fully understand the damaging power of my characters. I also understand their limitations, and most of the time they don’t make poor life decisions (such as to piss off the god that could crush them with hardly a thought). I am finding that not all writers have this common sense, and it is unfair to ask those that DO to censor their characters actions when provoked.

Here is my take on RP Etiquette –

If my character is in a situation to which they will be saying or doing something that may invoke a violent reaction from yours, I will message you to discuss it first. It may not be in my character’s best interest to do so, and in those cases I have to consider how far I will let them go…but, I refuse to muzzle them. I will not censor their faults for your sensibilities.

I ask the same respect in return.

I read everyone’s rules (usually multiple times, especially before responses for slower threads just to refresh myself) and I will never move a plot in the direction of someone’s known trigger. That being said, sometimes we don’t know all of our squicks and triggers, and if something makes you uncomfortable, you’re more than welcome to come talk to me about it. It may mean that something in your last response needs to change so that my response can change. Because I won’t censor my muse, but I am willing to rethink current paths of action, as long as you are as well.

What I will not do is muzzle my muse’s violent, problematic behaviour, if your muse is antagonistic and inspires such reaction. Many of us play problematic characters, we love them for their faults (in some cases we look for character development to help them through/beyond those faults, but not everyone does, and some faults can’t be “fixed”). What we do not want is to be asked to play them according to your perception based on a scene you saw once (and thus felt a powerful, problematic character can be “changed”), or because you decided you shipped the faceclaim, or for whatever else reason. This is a form of god-modding, and if asked to change my character because you think they should be written X way instead of Y way…well, we’re just not compatible writers. This is a collaboration; not your fanfiction.

Zayde barely registered being spoken to, but the drug-induced hypersensitivity to touch made him feel the movement of being yanked upward and carried away from his resting place. Somewhere behind the wall of amphetamine and other substances, whatever remained of his consciousness figured whoever it was was probably either security trying to kick him out of the club so they wouldn’t be liable if something happened to him, or an associate of his father sent to come and pick his sorry ass up and bring him home so he could sleep off the shit in his system until he came down and woke up, sick and belligerent, and pissed at himself for scraping through to see another day.

Either way, Zayde didn’t want them dragging him anywhere, not caring if he did end up dead since that was half the point of why he got so fucked up in the first place. He struggled futilely against the other, the drugs making his limbs as useless in fighting his way free as they did making him speak coherently beyond a slurred “leave me” in protest. Hell, he’d rather be scraped up off the floor by an EMT after passing out in a puddle of his own vomit than deal with anyone connected to his father.

Thankfully, his dad was one of those assholes with VIP perks for places like this, so most of the staff knew him pretty well. No one questioned it when he carried the stranger upstairs and dumped him in one of the reserved booths in the back. At least there, no one would bother him and the bouncers would make sure no one robbed his stupid ass blind.

“Righ’, cuz I wan’ yer life or death on my hands,” he muttered propping him on his side. He could easily pull some of the drugs from his system, but he hated the way it made his skin crawl when he did it. Even after this many decades, it made him dizzy. Probably because he wasn’t really a drug user himself and he was only getting the negative effects left over from it all.

“Oh and I wonder the fuck why?” Jack muttered sarcastically, incredulous at the sheer level of disconnection Chance seemed to have from absolute basic logic.

“Tell me something, if you wanted me to be like you, would it not have made more sense to raise me the same way you were? And yet you decided to do everything the complete and total opposite, but somehow expected the same results.”

Spending too much time trying to work out how that could possibly make any logical sense was giving him a headache.

“If you hadn’t broken Sera, maybe she could have explained that to you before you went and fucked everything up.”

He shook his head, trying to find the words to correct himself. “Even before I started killing, people left,” he elaborated.

“All of my mother’s other children were raised much the same way as I and none of them are like. Or, at least, none of them other than Sera anymore.” He refused to acknowledge his twin, not after learning what exactly she had done to Manson, but that was hardly the point. “As for my father’s other children, none of them are killers. Elise is not his daughter.” He liked Elise better than he did the rest of that lot.

“I was trying to fix her. She was exploding her own goddamn organs,” he growled, immediately defensive all over again.

So here is the deal

My schedule is a fucking mess this weekend. I get off at 2am and have to be back at 9:30am. I am going to be dead af tomorrow night when I get home and I open Sunday. I will NOT be on until like 5pm Sunday at the earliest (this is est btw). Monday I also open but then I have 2 closes and a day off, so I will be back on normal hours for a couple days at least.

“She has a certain way of outmatching stubbornness with kindness that wears even the toughest down eventually,” Hypnos pointed out with a fond smile.

“Oh, come now, they can’t be that bad, surely?”

He was teasing slightly, though he was curious what he meant by them not being easy to be around.

“That might be putting things mildly,” he groused, trying to sound far grumpier over it than he felt.

“When you meet them, you’ll understand.”

There was nothing he could say to properly prepare Hypnos for meeting Mavros and Thea and he could only hope they didn’t just spring themselves on him.
