“Do you really think that’ll happen to me?”

Jayne wanted to believe in at least the hope of it, but it was hard for him with everything he’d been through in his life in terms of his own loss and grief. Even if there was a chance he could come back, that wouldn’t bring back any of his family with him.

“I can hope. Mom might raise all kinds of hell if you’re taken away forever. She’s…protective.”

It was an understatement, honestly. His grandfather had taken him to meet his grandmother once and his mom had freaked out. He hadn’t been allowed to be alone with grandpa Ike after that one.

“That’s where the unknowns come in. Anything from certain experienced emotions leaving a residual sensation on the particular topic they’re attached to, right up to similar mental health issues to what Jack experiences in the long term, and by that, I mean hallucinations and such. The kind that don’t fade unless managed with medication like Jack has.”

Saying outright that doing this could render Chance more or less stuck with symptoms of schizophrenia wasn’t entirely accurate. Only an actual medical diagnosis could decide on that, but Cam figured a cautious approach was necessary in any case, given Chance’s already colourful history.

“Yeah. Yeah, I’ll go get them…” he faltered, starting to make a move to just leave and remove himself from his discomfort.

After a moment, he moved closer to the boy and awkwardly patted him on the shoulder. He knew what Jericho had put the kid through, knew he had personally done worse to his own kids, but he was trying

“Just go to your mother’s. Whatever is about to go down, you’ll be safe there. Make sure Avalon gets Jack out of the immediate range of fire. I’m trusting you, don’t make me regret it.”
