“I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that what you’re asking for is complicated, and that’s putting it lightly.”

Giving someone emotions, in general, was easy, but Chance was asking for didn’t fall neatly into that category. It wasn’t as simple as just tweaking a few hormones and neurotransmitters this time around. What he was asking was to feel and understand a specific experience of someone with already atypical brain chemistry, without lumping the trauma on top of that.

“And I can’t guarantee that there won’t be some sort of lasting side effect from it. Jack’s schizophrenia means he experiences emotions and memories far differently, not just from you, but from most other people too. For you to have any idea what that’s like, I’m going to have to more or less change your brain chemistry to match his, and that’s the difficult part because there are a lot of unknowns.”

He was quiet as Cam spoke, not that he spoke much to begin with when he could help it. Complicated. He wasn’t an idiot, he knew it wasn’t going to be as simple just making him feel any base line emotional response. Truthfully, he wasn’t sure if it could be done without both him and Jack in the same room. 

I don’t care, just do it, were the first words on the tip of Chance’s tongue, but the idea of side effects had him stopping. “What sort of side effects?” The last thing he wanted was to be stuck feeling guilt over people that didn’t matter for the rest of his goddamn life.
