“If it keeps Bailey and Molly safe, I’m out of that shit,” Zeke answered plainly.
He’d rather throw all of his effort into protecting those two than to keep trying to play along with his family, pretending to be something he wasn’t, and he was more than prepared to go on the run if necessary, but the deal Jeff seemed to be offering suggested that that could be pushed back to being a last resort.
Jeff nodded, relieved that the kid seemed to making the smart choice. He would hate to have to kill someone so young, especially if it would hurt any of the pups. The biggest issue would be placing him. Jeff knew most of the family wasn’t going to be willing to take a hunter, out of the game or not.
“As soon as we know it’s safe to pull you and those two without risk of serious injury or worse to the three of you, you’ll likely be staying my husband and myself. No one else is going to be able to take you in. The pups aren’t the issue, but we’ve got folks in the extended family that have been left orphaned by hunters. Too many old wounds. You’d be safe with us though.”
