It was closer to 1am, wispy clouds drifting lazily across the sky, obscuring the moonlight in random patches. The waves lapped against the shore, dragging sand and shells when it receded, fingers of water trying desperately to cling to the land. The water was cool as it slid across her bare feet and Calla wiggled her toes against it reflexively.
She stepped forward, blue eyes vacant. The ley lines held her entranced, following their path instead of one she would choose for herself. The lacy dress clung to her legs as she walked deeper into the lake, any alarm bells that should have been screaming horrifyingly quiet. It was a thought that never even crossed her mind.
It wasn’t until the water touched her chin did Calla realize something wasn’t quite right, even if she couldn’t place her finger on it. Rust red hair floated around her shoulders as she slid through the lake, her feet firmly planted until she hit the end of the sand bar and everything dropped out from below her.
It wasn’t until she went to draw a breath and got lungs full of water did the girl seem to snap out of her daze, panic flooding her as she tried to struggle against the hold of the ley line below her. The water wasn’t deep, not really, but it didn’t need to be to drown someone.
Something touched her, whatever it was unseen in the blackness, and Calla lashed out, still trying to claw her way to the surface. Whatever it was seemed to be pulling her back towards the shallow but she didn’t notice until her head was above water and she was choking her way through deep breaths and coughing water out of her lungs.
Whatever was being said to her was falling on deaf ears as she tried to get as far from the edge of the water as she possibly could. It wasn’t until her knees were hitting warm, dry sand did she even look at whomever had, quite literally, saved her life.
