Teddy had never been so sincere about anything his whole life until now, and the fact he was telling her outright that he’d basically kill for her and she wasn’t running away from him just solidified the justification of it in his mind.

“You’re the only girl I’ll ever love.” he murmured, nuzzling her tenderly in return. “In this life and the next.”

“I’ll always come back to you,” she returned, pulling him that last little bit closer. She just wanted as much of his body touching hers as physically possible. It was a comfort and she needed it right now.

Delaine figured that someone who’d had a disappointing threesome and was now trying to pick up a stranger via text probably wasn’t all that hot, so when he opened the picture he sent and saw that he was considerably more attractive than he anticipated, it surprised him and made him feel all the more comfortable with flirting with him.

[text:Lewis] Cute. That’s definitely a swipe right from me 😉 I’m Delaine, but with a face that pretty, you can damn well call me whatever you want [/text]

[text: Delaine] A tinder joke? Really? Woooooow :p
[text: Delaine] Okay, with cheekbones like that, you can make whatever terrible jokes you want. Do people even pay attention to what you say when you talk or do they just stare?

He could definitely see why the stranger seemed so confident. With a face like that, he could probably talk his way out of mass murder and people would believe him.

“Then why’d you leave your bed in the first place?” he said, sighing with slight frustration. Sometimes August was ridiculous. And that was coming from Chase. “Are you actually not hungry or do you just not trust me to make your food?”

He was quiet for a long moment. “I didn’t want to be alone. I woke up because of nightmares,” he confessed, the words mumbled and almost hard to hear. It wasn’t wise to admit weakness to a hunter, even if Chase had saved his life. “You don’t trust me to cook,” he pointed out, trying to dodge the question. As a shifter, he needed to eat more than Chase did, especially with how much energy healing burned, but his stomach felt like a ball of lead.

“It’s both rude and stupid to underestimate people. You are incredibly unpleasant.” And that was coming from him of all people. “I have a job to do. You are the one interfering with my duties, which puts you in the wrong.”

A quiet beeping stole whatever snarky response she had on the tip of her tongue as she hit the button on the side of her watch. “Stalling, not interfering. There’s a difference,” she replied, brushing past him to shut down the cameras. The last spark of life was gone, he had suffered enough for her employer to be satisfied. That was all that mattered to her.

“I’m not telling you to stay on the run. I’m telling you to run now. Go settle down somewhere else. Take a new name if you have to. I don’t care. Just get out while you still can. It’ll be easier for everyone.” He didn’t know if that last part was true, but it would probably be better for August at least. “I’ll be fine.” Another possible lie, but said with the confidence of someone who believed it to be true. He’d learned how to bluff over the years, that was certain.

“You know I can’t really just settle down anywhere.” His eyes were too much of a dead give away and people tended to get suspicious when he vanished around the full moon every month. He unfolded from the couch, the motion an almost boneless seeming grace. It was easy to let what he was swim to the surface around someone that knew about him. Maybe not smart, but it was easier. He closed the distance with that same unnatural glide, all the weight on the balls of his feet, and he sniffed the air lightly. “You might look and sound like you believe that, but you don’t smell like you do, not entirely.”
