She needed a very brief moment to compose herself before she could stomach the second shot, the taste of the first lingering enough to have a small voice in the back of her head questioning whether she really wanted to take another hit of it when she knew full well it was never going to be something she’d develop any sort of taste for, regardless of her reason for drinking it in the first place.

Still, after silently telling herself to get her shit together, down it went, this time keeping a straight face now that she’d gotten past the worst of the taste.

“My ma used ta drink this shi’,” he finally said, fingers tracing over the edge of a shot glass before he picked up. “Ne’er liked the tas’e personally, bu’ i’ was all she drank. Cord used ta give ‘er shi’ ‘bou’ it and the fac’ tha’ she liked ta chew on licorice roo’.”

It was the most he had probably ever said about his mother to anyone that had never met her. Chay just never really spoke of her, but there was a sadness in his eyes when he did.

Seeing Jeff move away from him and break down destroyed what little resolve Ollie had left, the coyote staring at him in utter heartbreak. He wanted to tell him it was okay and reassure him, but he couldn’t get past the acknowledgment of how totally fucked they were.

Still, Ollie managed to blame himself for it. For freaking out and trying to run, for setting Jeff off. Hell, for telling him about Luna in the first place. If he hadn’t done any of that, maybe they wouldn’t be here like this now.

All Jeff could do was weep as the guilt and self hatred devoured him. It didn’t matter that he wanted to be good to Ollie, to give what he deserved. The fact remained that he couldn’t and it was physically harming Ollie.

“I’m so sorry,” he choked out, curling in on himself a little more, unable to look at the coyote.

mythsandmonsters:

Ollie didn’t answer. His jaw and his head hurt to much to respond, but his silence spoke volumes about how crushed he was emotionally.

Then he remembered that he hadn’t actually come here willingly, the coyote unable to deny even to himself that he’d been kidnapped, and not just technically. Jeff had dragged him here by force and told him he’d kill him if he tried to leave. This was a hostage situation whether either of them admitted it or not, and even Ollie’s Stockholm syndrome wasn’t enough to take away the potential that he might not make it out alive.

The weight of the silence settled over him and gods did it make him ache. He had done this. He knew there was no coming back from this situation and he hated himself for it more than he could put into words.

Instead, Jeff scooted away from Ollie, breathing catching in his throat as he tried to swallow back the urge to cry. It was a losing battle, the sting of tears already blurring his vision as he began to break down in a completely different manner.

It was the one thing he had tried to keep Ollie from ever seeing.

mythsandmonsters:

It was Ollie that woke first, despite his injuries, the room slowly coming back into focus as he gasped for breath like he was surfacing from the dark.

He remained still for several minutes, trying to adjust to the almost excruciating ache that remained throughout his bruised and battered body, not even noticing Jeff was curled around him for a while until he tried to move, quickly abandoning the idea in case he woke up and the onslaught continued.

He was still clothed, which was odd in itself, Ollie’s t-shirt stuck to him with dried blood that finally alerted him to the torn stitches, and his face felt bruised and swollen though he couldn’t recall Jeff having done more than grip his jaw a little too tight.

Jeff stirred a little when he felt Ollie begin to move and he slowly uncurled from around him. His throat felt dry from crying himself to sleep and his head ached a little, but he knew it was just a touch of dehydration.

“I’m sorry,” he mumbled, voice thick with sleep and quiet. He always apologized but it was never really enough and they both knew that.

mythsandmonsters:

A few more moments and Nissy was following suit, curling up between Blake and Cay, still lazily running her fingers over Blake’s fur as she wiggled a little to get comfortable, casting a sleepy smile in Cayden’s direction.

Blake lifted his head when Nissy moved to get comfortable, but he didn’t seem bothered. He exchanged a quick glance with Cayden before they both curled around her, cocooning her in warmth and security

mythsandmonsters:

Ollie couldn’t remember when things got quiet again. He was still somewhere dark, but it didn’t feel suffocating anymore, almost like he was dreaming but he was vividly aware of the fact, which was odd because his anxiety and depression meds made his dreams too fuzzy to remember much of them.

If he’d been even half-conscious, he might have figured it was that his head injury had healed just enough to take him out of immediate danger, but logic wasn’t something that seemed to exist in much of a measure wherever he was right now.

Jeff stayed wrapped around him until he had cried himself out, the guilt gnawing at his stomach even then. He was quickly becoming his own worst nightmare and he had no idea how to stop it, but he knew he couldn’t let Ollie go either. The fact that he could accidentally kill him terrified him and he couldn’t help but wonder if that was how his dad had felt over his mom. It wasn’t an encouraging last thought before sleep sucked him under.

mythsandmonsters:

Everything get like it had gone into slow motion. It was dark, but Ollie could still hear Jeff breaking things somewhere in that distance, the sound muted and distorted like he was underwater, sharing the sensation with feeing like he could hardly breath, taking the shallowest of breaths against lead weights on his chest.

Ollie wondered if he was actually dead now, or close to being so, since he couldn’t really feel anything else other than heaviness and a dull, persistent throb that radiated from behind his eyes and down his neck.

It had taken hours for Jeff to calm down and come back into himself, so it took him a long moment of actually looking at Ollie to realize what he was seeing. A small whine escaped him as he hit the floor and all but crawled over to him, terrified that he had killed him.

Finding the pulse didn’t do much to calm his guilt though and he was gentle as he picked the coyote up and took him into one of the two bedrooms of the cabin. It was the bigger room with the nicer bed, and he laid Ollie down before wrapping around him carefully, apologizing over and over as he wept.

mythsandmonsters:

Ollie stopped crying but only because the last impact had him almost unconscious as he slumped again, his vision going black although his awareness still held on a little out of survival instinct.

If he took another hit to the head like that, there was a strong likelihood it would push too far past his ability to heal fast enough to stop it killing him altogether.

When he slumped to the floor, Jeff landed a couple sharp kicks to his torso. He thought it might force Ollie to get up, but it clearly hadn’t helped any. It hadn’t helped get his anger under control either, but it didn’t do any good to hit Ollie if he was unconscious so he turned his attention on the surroundings.

mythsandmonsters:

He tried to stop for the sake of his safety but it was difficult, too much overloading his brain enough to handle physically forcing himself to fight the pain and terror and pull himself together again.

By now, he could feel the blood dripping down the back of his neck and soaking into his shirt and he guessed the all-consuming ache throughout his head had something to do with it, though his immediate thought didn’t touch on the possibility of having a fractured skull despite the evidence.

When he didn’t immediately stop, he squeezed until he felt the bones begin to give. He was tempted to completely shatter his jaw, but he knew that wouldn’t do a lot of good, so he hit bashed his head against the wall yet again and let go of his face.

All he could smell was blood and it was making it harder to reel himself back in even a little.

mythsandmonsters:

“I’m yours!” Ollie screamed desperately, breaking down into tears as the ache in his head sharpened dramatically before he snagged against the wall, sobbing pathetically.

“I won’t leave you. I promise.”

The tears were pissing him off more and he grabbed Ollie up again, gripping his jaw and getting his face far too close to the coyote’s.

“Quit your fucking crying or I will break every goddamn bone in your pathetic fucking body,” he snarled, adding more pressure to Ollie’s jaw. It wouldn’t be the first time he broken something and it likely wouldn’t be the last if he had anything to do with it.
