mythsandmonsters:

She whined again in response to his question, her head pushing against his hand in need of comfort.

If she could speak, she’d ask him to help her get to her bed so she had somewhere more comfortable to lie down until the ache and exhaustion passed or she fell asleep.

He rubbed at her ears like he would any other fluffy animal and he was honestly a little in awe over how soft her fur was around her face. He shifted a little closer, trying to give her something to lean on. He had no idea what to do when she seemed like she was in pain.

mythsandmonsters:

Frey had managed to shift almost completely in the time it took for Dyson to come to her room, the last few of the smaller bones and tendons settling as the door opened.

She was still lying on the floor, whimpering a little and too exhausted to stand up on her own just yet. Forcing the shift had taken it out of her more than waiting for the moon to bring it on since she’d had to put in a lot more energy to set it off and do it quickly, but she moved enough to turn her head to look at him and let out a soft whine.

It was a good thing Dyson had turned the stove off before coming up to check on her because all thoughts of cooking were gone. He hurried to her side and knelt, fingers brushing over the top of her head gently.

“Are you gonna be okay, Frey Frey?” He knew she couldn’t answer properly, but any sign was good enough for him.

mythsandmonsters:

“Okay.” she nodded, starting to back out of the room a few paces.

There was a slight moment of hesitation as she reached the door, a brief glance and small smile cast back at Dyson before she disappeared from view and made her way back to her room.

It didn’t take long to remove her clothes, but it took a few seconds to psych herself up enough to try to force the shift, swallowing back a scream as she felt the first bone pop, setting off the cascade like dominoes falling.

He smiled back before digging out a bunch of pans and getting everything set up. He was making her eggs, sausage, and bacon while he was adding french toast to his own breakfast.

After about twelve or so minutes, he had lost track of time a bit, he made his way to her room and knocked twice before open the door an inch.

“Frey?”

mythsandmonsters:

“I don’t know. I don’t usually force it.”

She’d seen shifters up at the pack grounds do it in a matter of seconds, but they were usually born shifters and had been doing it their entire lives. For bitten ones though, it could be anywhere up to fifteen minutes, depending on how practised they were at it.

“Maybe check on me in about ten minutes? I’ll leave the door unlocked.”

Dyson nodded as he chewed at his lower lip for a moment. It bothered him that this caused her so much pain and grief and he honestly didn’t understand why she didn’t spend full moons with the pack that the bar knew well enough.

“I can do that.”

mythsandmonsters:

She tried to give him a smile but it came out more of a helpless grimace, her anxiety spiking some, but he was right, so she just had to suck it up and do it, hoping that she could get it done quickly instead of the horrific, drawn out way it usually happened when the moon forced her into it.

“You might have to come let me out of my room. Door handles and coyotes don’t exactly mix,” she mumbled, chewing her lip and blushing. “Y’know, the whole ‘lacking opposable thumbs’ thing?”

“I’d say just bark when you’re ready but all the rooms are damn sound proof. How long does it usually take?”

He was already digging through the fridge for bacon and eggs and anything else he could think of. He knew he had to have something sweet, but she needed meat and protein.

mythsandmonsters:

He had a point, albeit a small one. It didn’t lessen the pain at all, but it took away some of the other factors that made her hate it, and at least then she wouldn’t have to worry anymore if she’d already got the first of the hard parts out the way.

“I suppose. Not here though. I don’t want anyone to see me.”

Dyson nodded but he didn’t want to let go of her quite yet. But, he kissed her forehead and stepped back, a small smile on his lips.

“Go shift. I’ll make food for after.”

mythsandmonsters:

“I guess?”

Once she was actually shifted, there wasn’t much of an issue. She still had scars in coyote form, which made her fur patchy in places, but she was more or less physically fine, the pain almost exclusively confined to the actual shift itself with how her muscles and bones had to reconfigure underneath skin that had very little elasticity to it.

“I just wanna get it over with,” she admitted quietly

“Then shift now? I mean, isn’t it less awful if you don’t fight it?”

He didn’t know a whole lot about shifting, but he did pay attention when people talked around the bar. Plus, he figured it would help ease her anxiety if it was just done and over with.

mythsandmonsters:

“I can’t. If I eat anything, the pain makes me sick when I shift,” she explained sheepishly.

It was bad enough that she would lock herself away so nobody would hear how much she was suffering, but to have puddles of coyote vomit to deal with after made her feel all the more embarrassed about it.

“Can you eat after you shift?”

The last thing he wanted to do was make things harder for her, especially when he just wanted to take care of her. Not that he felt she really needed it, if anything, she was stronger than she loked, but that didn’t mean he didn’t want to try.

mythsandmonsters:

Frey shook her head. With all her attention on dreading shifting, she often forgot to eat regularly enough to keep her strength up, as much as she’d been told that it was important to do so, especially with how much energy it took out of her.

“Been a little too preoccupied to feel hungry.”

“You gotta eat, Frey Frey.”

His tone was gentle, coaxing as he nuzzled at her a little. The other shifters that came through always ate like they were starving on full moon days and he knew she definitely didn’t eat enough some days.

mythsandmonsters:

“Promise,” she answered, a faint smile barely reaching her lips as she curled back against his chest, nuzzling him a little as she closed her eyes again and sought out comfort.

If she was honest, Frey liked Dyson’s scent, even though she didn’t often let him or anyone get this close to her, even when it wasn’t coming up to a full moon, but that was down to her other issues as well as her problems shifting.

His fingers slid through her hair as he rested his cheek against the top of her head. Her past didn’t bother him and neither did her scars. He knew none of them were her fault and if anyone tried to make her feel about any of it, he’d have no trouble beating their face in.

“You eat yet?”
