Ollie’s brain could barely function coherently under the stress, still wired into survival mode and unsure whether he could actually trust Chance’s word that he was there to take him home and not do something far worse.
“Jeff grabbed me before… I don’t remember,” he muttered, trying to think whether Jeff might have gone back and got his stuff while he was blacked out from head trauma.
He didn’t say anything else as he moved to gently scoop the boy up. The last thing he needed was for the kid to try standing and collapse. He doubted Jeff had been in the right state of mind to grab anything when he had clearly been the one to rough the other up so badly.
The hospital room was dark but there was the distinct feel of movement when he popped in. Sera had set this part up, she was better with the talking part than he was, and he simply settled Ollie on the bed before flipping on the lights.
“When he’s cleared, let me know.”

Ollie had been bracing for Jeff to kill him, so it took a long moment for him to even realise what was happening when Chance appeared and took Jeff down.
The sight of Jeff lying on the floor, his head twisted at an unnatural angle was enough to have the coyote recoiling in horror and grief, logic gone into thinking that Chance had somehow killed his grandson before Ollie’s brain would catch up and remember that Jeff couldn’t actually die.
Between the frightened and confused whimpers that fell out of him, he barely managed an “I don’t know.” in response to the question, his terrified gaze fixed solely on Jeff’s body slumped on the floor.
Chance stepped over his grandson, but it was an effort not to kick him. The boy wasn’t breathing, but he’d be fine. Sore, but fine none the less.
“He’ll be fine in a few hours,” Chance stated, seeing the way the other kept looking at the body. Normally, he wouldn’t bother to reassure anyone, but this was supposed to be a rescue mission and breaking the boy emotionally wouldn’t really make a lot of sense.
“I am taking you to see Eli and then, if he okays it, back to your dads. Did you bring anything or are you ready to go?”
“Just get it over with and kill me already. Please!” The coyote begged in a fleeting moment of recklessness out of complete desperation. He was too far beyond being in his right mind over the whole thing and the pain in his head had pushed him to breaking point.
“Don’t fucking say that!” he screamed, lunging at him.
Jeff didn’t get too far into the movement. One moment he was going for Ollie and the next there was nothing but darkness.
The snapped neck wouldn’t kill him, Chance knew that much, but it would keep him out for at least 6 hours and that was more than enough time. His head tipped to the side a little as he studied his nephew, taking in the damage.
“Can you stand?”
