“You grew up with magic and all that. I grew up with hunters. Makes things harder sometimes.” In fact, it had almost never made things easier. Once or twice it had helped him to evade hunters, but for the most part it had just made him paranoid. He pursed his lips for a moment. “She ever mention missing… us?”

“I grew up with serial killers.” And it had definitely affected the sort of person he had personally grown up to be. Jeff wanted to lie, to say something cruel, but he knew it would hurt his mom more than anyone else and he honestly couldn’t bring himself to do it. Not when she had worked so hard to help him find balance in himself. “She cries. Usually when dad’s not around. Goes to some graveyard and talks to her first mom’s headstone and cries. I followed her a few times, to make sure she was safe.”

All of my drafts are done and in queue. Changed the queue tag TWICE this week, don’t judge me. I think I’m going to be sticking to the most recent one (anything you say can and will be held against queue). I’ll be on after work tomorrow, but, for now, I need to sleep if the cats will fucking let me.

“People cheat death all the time. Are you forgetting that I should have died hundreds of years ago? Death is not simple. It never has been.” It should have been, but Alexi had seen too many people fuck with it over the years. He knew better. “I wasn’t binding her to you, but fine.” He dropped the knife. “I won’t use your blood.” He knew other immortals. He’d have to waste time tracking one down, but he could make it work.

“You do realize that if the Fates wanted you dead, nothing you could possibly do would stop them from severing your thread, right?” She knew a thing or two about the issue and knew that Alexi wasn’t exactly marked to die any time soon. “Not in the literal sense, no.” But metaphysics and literally had little in common. “The girl is marked to die and if you push the issue, I will rip out your heart.”

“You say that like she doesn’t already mess with my hair all the time anyway.”

If Matt had his way, his hair would be as carefree as the rest of him, but Gwen had been fussing over him since he was a kid, so letting her play with his hair was second nature these days.

“Why do you think I keep mine shorter?”

He had tried longer hair once and Gwen had been an absolute terror about it. After about the eighth time of her braiding it, he had cut it short and kept it that way.

“I don’t even want to know how she would react to hearing us talk like this. I don’t think we’d ever hear the end of it.”
