“She’s been though so much shit already. I can’t add mine on top of it. I can’t do that to her or to any of you. It’s not who I am as a person and I know you know that. I don’t even like letting Simone help me.” Even after all this time, he still hated letting her worry about him. And now more people were worried and he hated it even more. “I’m trying, okay? I’m trying to get it together, but I just need time. I died and it sucked and I can’t just… I can’t make that okay. But I’m trying to find a way to make it manageable, like all of the other shit I’ve had to deal with and I will because it’s what I do.” He hesitated briefly before adding, “Benji’s been helping. So I’m not… I’m not trying to do it completely alone, alright? But I can’t…” His voice broke and he took a deep breath to steady himself. “I can’t ask you guys to help. I just… I can’t put that on any of you.”

“You wouldn’t be “putting it on” us, what part of that don’t you fucking get? For fucks sake, Jasper, we’re asking to help carry your burdens because no one should have to shoulder all that you do on their own. Do you really think Lyri would have survived everything on her own? No. Even dead, you were there to help shoulder her pain and try to care for her. Why can’t you just let her of all people return that gesture? What are you so damn afraid of?” She wasn’t going to drop it even if she was relieved to hear that he was finally opening up to Benji even a little.

Ollie wanted to say “I know.” but the words wouldn’t come out, instead replaced by a faint whine. Even if he could say anything, what was the point? They’d played this out so many times that words had lost all meaning, and they wouldn’t fix the fact that Ollie knew Jeff wouldn’t take him home now.

He lay there, trying to will himself to do or say something, but for the first time, he couldn’t even bring himself to cry, the exhaustion and hopelessness too deep for him to find any emotion, just blunt acceptance of his fate.

When the sobs slowed to silent tears, Jeff turned away from Ollie and rolled off of the bed. There was food in the kitchen, but he couldn’t stomach the mere idea of it as he made for the other bedroom. He figured Ollie didn’t really want to be around him right then. He knew he didn’t want to be around himself either.

“Nothing that won’t fix itself in time, I assure you,” he answered, glancing up at her from where he lay in the dirt. She didn’t look any older than his youngest brothers would be about now, still teenagers technically, but rapidly approaching their twenties, though Rayne hadn’t seen either of them since they were kids.

“Don’t suppose I might request a little help getting up, could I? I promise I don’t bite.”

His words gave her paused and she studied him for a few moments. While he might claim to not bite, she did and that would hardly go over very well given his current state. Still, she looked young and unassuming enough that he might not trigger the more monstrous part of her being more than the thick smell of blood on the air did.

“You need somewhere safe to go.. Or a doctor,” she mumbled, kneeling to help him and trying to breathe as shallowly as humanly possible. It didn’t help, she could still almost taste his blood at the back of her throat and she had to quickly bite down on her lower lip to keep from whining.

“Or you reincarnate and we go through this whole fucked up process all over again and that sounds exhausting for the both of us, now doesn’t it?” He studied Zia for a quiet moment, abnormally still. “Am I really that bad to be stuck with? Like… I know I’m no one’s favorite person, but would you seriously rather die than spend more time around me?”

Something in the way Leo asked it had Zia swallowing back the first cruel words that threatened to spill from his lips. It would have been a lie, and a rather nasty one, and he couldn’t bring himself to say it. “If you weren’t around, I would have killed myself years ago,” he confessed quietly, refusing to look the demon at all.

If Aislynn gave any indication she was worried Teddy’s mom would walk in on them, he would bother to get up and lock his bedroom door, but he knew Sera wouldn’t interrupt them at all just because this was the first time he had brought anyone home who wasn’t family and that automatically granted him some privacy with how rare an occurrence it was.

Teddy would have quite happily let Aislynn cut him to ribbons if she wanted. He didn’t care about a little pain or blood. That just seemed normal to him, but there was plenty of time to let Aislynn get comfortable with the idea of clawing the hell out of him.

Her movements were a little more frenzied as she rubbed her cheeks against his skin, letting his scent overwhelm her. The more feline instincts were kicking in with a vengeance, her normally impeccable control crumbling to dust in the wake of his touch.

She licked along his throat with long, languid strokes of her tongue, delighting in the way his skin and sweat tasted mingled. She pushed at his pants again, trying to get them off of his hips without moving from beneath him but only growing more frustrated with the damn things.

With a heated whine, she forced herself to stop and look up at him, the blue of her eyes consumed by the chartreuse of the lynx. “I want this,” she murmured, the sincerity almost lost in the desperation of her tone, but it was laid bare in her stare as she cupped his face in her hands.

Gabriel didn’t really know what to say to Eva when she came into the room, but he was glad she was at least physically unharmed, despite the fact he couldn’t say the same about himself.

“Hi,” he mumbled, lacking anything better for the moment, looking a little sheepish about everything.

She hesitated in the doorway, face too pale and eyes bloodshot. She hadn’t slept and it was obvious she had spent a decent amount of the time he was out crying.

“Hi..” she replied, voice a little rough as she twisted back and forth a little. Torrie had told her she didn’t have a lot of time and to take advantage of it, but she was still freaked out.

She needed a very brief moment to compose herself before she could stomach the second shot, the taste of the first lingering enough to have a small voice in the back of her head questioning whether she really wanted to take another hit of it when she knew full well it was never going to be something she’d develop any sort of taste for, regardless of her reason for drinking it in the first place.

Still, after silently telling herself to get her shit together, down it went, this time keeping a straight face now that she’d gotten past the worst of the taste.

“My ma used ta drink this shi’,” he finally said, fingers tracing over the edge of a shot glass before he picked up. “Ne’er liked the tas’e personally, bu’ i’ was all she drank. Cord used ta give ‘er shi’ ‘bou’ it and the fac’ tha’ she liked ta chew on licorice roo’.”

It was the most he had probably ever said about his mother to anyone that had never met her. Chay just never really spoke of her, but there was a sadness in his eyes when he did.

Seeing Jeff move away from him and break down destroyed what little resolve Ollie had left, the coyote staring at him in utter heartbreak. He wanted to tell him it was okay and reassure him, but he couldn’t get past the acknowledgment of how totally fucked they were.

Still, Ollie managed to blame himself for it. For freaking out and trying to run, for setting Jeff off. Hell, for telling him about Luna in the first place. If he hadn’t done any of that, maybe they wouldn’t be here like this now.

All Jeff could do was weep as the guilt and self hatred devoured him. It didn’t matter that he wanted to be good to Ollie, to give what he deserved. The fact remained that he couldn’t and it was physically harming Ollie.

“I’m so sorry,” he choked out, curling in on himself a little more, unable to look at the coyote.
