âThe moment the world falls apart, you start forgetting history and wrongdoings in the past.â

âSo be like Manson or Sera?â
It was the only alternative he could even think of to justify it in a way that Jeff might be able to learn to feel comfortable about it. After all, they still killed, but it served a purpose by removing the worst kinds of abusers and murderers from humanity.
It was apparent Jeff couldnât fight what was in his blood, but Ollie could live with Jeff venting it on others more deserving of the pain if it meant it wasnât visited on him instead.
âI donât want to kill anyone,â he whined, the fear of it spiking sharply when Ollie suggested it. He was so afraid that if he did try to even start there, that he would devolve rapidly and lose himself to it.Â
The conversation wasnât a good one to be having when he was already stressed, but he didnât know how to change the topic.
@mythsandmonsters and @thewitchandtheangels cuz you two need the sorta feels
Normally, Chance would have called ahead instead of just appearing in his daughterâs living room, covered in blood. But the thought never crossed his mind and he barely even noticed that she had jumped when he showed up. He didnât speak as he set Oonaâs shattered wings on her coffee table, knowing she would recognize the coloring of the feathers, even coated in the deep rust color of blood.Â
âWh-whatâs this?â she finally asked, eyes a little too wide. She didnât understand what she was looking at, her brain trying to process it all.
âEpiales told me what she did to you.â His words were matter of fact, but the anger was still there. âShe wonât ever have the ability to do so again.â
Her brow furrowed at that. Her dad had never done anything even remotely protective before. Her fingers skimmed over the wings for a moment and she swallowed hard, trying to dislodge the lump in her throat.Â
âWhy did you do this?â she asked softly, almost like a child that needed to know that her daddy had been trying to protect.
He glared, but he was staring through her. âI hurt you, but I did not torture you. She crossed the line.âÂ
It was that simple to him, really. He was abusive, sure, but it came from a need for control. That didnât make it right, but he hadnât been as excessively cruel just for the hell of it.Â
âWhy does that matter to you?â
His focus finally shifted to her and the anger softened a little. âI was trying to make you like me. She wanted to use you as a toy. You are mine. I protect what is mine.â The words were slow, level, as he worked to choose the right ones. He wasnât good at this.
Manson stared at him for a long moment, lower lip trembling before she launched herself forward and clung to him as she began to sob. All of her life she had wanted to know that either one of her parents cared about her and this… This was the closest she knew she was going to get.Â
He had done this for her. Not anyone else and not for himself. Her.Â
Chance was caught entirely off guard and he stood there, awkwardly patting the top of her head while she wept. He didnât understand her tears, but he let her have her moment.Â
It was all he had to give, but it was enough for her.
âI donât wanna die, but I donât think that option is on the table anymore, Jeff. We both know that the harder you fight that⌠other guy, the stronger he gets and the more this happens, so unless thereâs some way you can make that other guy go away, heâs probably going to kill me before anyone else can take me away from you, and honestly, I think Iâd be okay with that if it meant it didnât hurt anymore and it would be over quick.â he sighed, starting to tear up again at the grim acceptance of it.
âBecause I donât want to live without you, and forcing me to do that makes me suffer longer until I either kill myself or I get sicker and sicker until my all internal organs shut down by themselves.â
âI donât know how,â he answered softly, the sheer agony over it evident in the way his voice cracked. He had tried so hard to force that monster down, to bury it, but Ollie was right. The more he fought it, the worse it got.
âI donât want to be like my dad or grandpa..â
âI know you donât.â
Ollie had never heard of anyone breaking their mating bond without whoever they were mated with dying first, and the few stories he had heard, the survivors had still almost died in the process from the grief, but even then, theyâd been stronger than Ollie knew he was, both physically and emotionally. Thatâs why he was convinced he wouldnât survive it.
âI donât think it can be undone.â he murmured, leaving out the part where he didnât want it undone anyway. âNot without one of us dying, and you canât, so it has to be me.â
He winced at the way Ollie said it, knowing that the darker parts of himself would have no problem killing the coyote over even the smallest slight. The injuries marring his body were proof of what Jeff was capable of.
âThere has to be a less fatal way to do it,â he stated, shaking his head and refusing to believe it had to be death.
Ollie guessed that Jeff didnât know and it pained him terribly, but he had to try to explain it, even if only so that Jeff knew what they were dealing with.
âBecause Iâm in love with you, but itâs more than that.â the coyote confessed, looking downright desolate. âWhen a shifter finds someoneâŚâ he faltered, trying to find the right words to explain it. âWhen someone like me gets attached hard enough to another person, itâs not just a feeling anymore. It becomes part of what we are, to the point where taking it away again can kill us.â
He knew it sounded melodramatic. Even Luna had doubted what he was saying, and she was a shifter, but it was the truth, as nonsensical as it sounded.
âJeff, thatâs why I get physically sick when Iâm away from you for too long. Itâs why no matter how fucked up things get, I canât leave, because it will literally kill me, and if I have to choose between wasting away to nothing or being killed by you, then Iâd rather you put me out of my misery âcause it would be a whole lot faster and less painful.â
He hadnât made the connection until Ollie said it and it honestly made him feel worse about it all. How could he possibly get this undone without hurting him?
âIs there a way to break it? Because you know this…this isnât going to work out when Luna tells your dads. Eventually theyâll find us and take you away from me.â But that might be better than the alternatives, really
âI donât want to kill you..â
