“You couldn’t have stopped it even if you were.” Cam reminded him softly, knowing that none of them could have and that saying as much wasn’t going to be much of a comfort, but it was the truth at least.

“It’s not your fault, Thras. You didn’t fail them. You loved them and they knew that, even to the end. They wouldn’t blame you for this and they wouldn’t want to see you blame yourself either.”

“I could have gotten them out,” he argued, desperation marring his usually cheerful tone. “I could have gotten them out had I been here. There would have been enough shadows.” 

The thoughts kept him up most nights. Honestly, Thras couldn’t remember the last time he had slept more than two hours and it was wearing him down bad.

He took the hint without further argument since he figured he’d just make everything worse if he pressed the matter any longer and it was upsetting him that he seemed to be upsetting her and he couldn’t for the life of him understand why.

“Okay,” he mumbled, getting up and moving to the door, hesitating to mutter another apology before he left.

She waited until he was completely out of earshot to let out a small whimper. Everything had gotten weird and messed up and it all her fault. She ruined everything. 

The thought chased its own tail around in her head until she began to cry, curled up in a the smallest ball she could possibly make of herself.

“Well, it’s not like we couldn’t just as easily move things to the bedroom now, is it, sweetness? You wouldn’t even have to walk there if you don’t want to.” he murmured, a comfortable sound rumbling in his chest as he spoke.

“My legs work perfectly fine,” she replied, her words holding no bite. She said that every time but she never complained when he carried her anywhere. She liked being held that close to him.
