“My cousin, yeah. It’s only
going to be a mess, but…” She shrugged. Wasn’t like she could do anything about
it. Chase was his own person who made his own choices. “Well, if it’s
comforting, they won’t hear otherwise from me. I’m retired and not really
interested in getting back in touch with any old ‘friends’.” She paused a
moment before adding, “But if you want, I can probably find out what they think
about your sister?”

“Cat must have a death wish.” It was the only thing he could think of. Del wasn’t sure how long it had been going on, but the fact that the leopard had seemed unharmed had been why she was buzzing with that gossip. Andy paused, nervous for a moment. “Her name’s Freya. Freya Mahlendorf. I pointed her towards the Sanctuary but I don’t want anyone trying to follow her there.”

“Who said they were?” He frowned, stilling for a rare moment,

“Acting like they’re well…” The fox in a hunt were the first words on the tip of her tongue, but she really didn’t want to offer up that in case he saw it as a suggestion. “It’s not like they’re deer and you’re going to cook them for dinner. They have lives, things to contribute to the world.”

“Wha’ are you?” Blunt, sure, but Chayton had never been one for subtle. He had never seen a point in it.

He tilted his head a moment and sniffed before recognizing the scent of magic in the air. Magic and sulfur. “A grim.”

He nodded, less tense as he let his shields slip back into place, the faint blue marks fading again. “Ne’er me’ on o’ your type before.”

“Didn’t talk,” she pointed out. Other kids spoke, she never had. It had taken a few years for him to get more than a name out of her. “Go good. Promise.” She trusted him and her family maybe a little too much.

“Not all kids do. And besides, words are sometimes overrated.” People often said things they quickly regretted. He’d never minded her silence. “I’m not sure that’s a promise you can make.”

“Bit you,” she added, snapping her teeth for emphasis. She had been terrified, but still. “Can too. Family love people. Real kissy people.”

She pulled a slim flask from her bag and topped off the glass with it, not bothering to be discreet. “As am I. I would hardly call you my type either.” A little rude, but she preferred to be honest.

“Gee, thanks,” he deadpanned, though he couldn’t say he blamed her for her bluntness.

“I am not going to pretend for the sake of putting on a display or for ego.” There was no point to it.

The contempt was clear one the lesser demon’s face. “You knew. You son of a fucking bitch, you knew who she was,” he snarled, not thinking as he took a swing at Yin. It didn’t matter to him that it was his boss. All he felt was rage.

“Of course,” he answered, letting the punch land, if only because he doubted Robert would stop until he got at least one hit in. He stumbled back, swearing to himself as pain blossomed in his jaw. He was quick to compose himself, gazing steadily at the other. “How did you not? Did you never look into your family? I’m told that most do.”

“My mother was dead before I was ten.” The words held something under the anger, but he wasn’t about to admit to it. He wasn’t meant to feel pain, not emotionally, but it was there. “I am not going back to that bar so you can take order and cram it up your fucking ass.”

There was something the other wasn’t saying and Chay dropped his shields enough to try sussing out what it was. “Huh.” He wasn’t human, but he couldn’t put a finger on what he was. Whatever it was, Chay had never met anything quite like him.

He arched a brow at the soft comment. “Never encountered security before?” He didn’t wait for a response before continuing, “I didn’t mean to interrupt. I’ll leave you to this.”

“Wha’ are you?” Blunt, sure, but Chayton had never been one for subtle. He had never seen a point in it.

“Why me?” There were plenty of other kids left on the streets, but he had picked the one that bit and barely spoke. It didn’t make a lot of sense to her. “I cry.”

“Why not? Humans tend to be wary of my kind. Even when they don’t know what we are.” He shook his head at her. “That’s cheating. And it’s not going to go over well if I agree, so it’s best if we just avoid that scenario.”

“Didn’t talk,” she pointed out. Other kids spoke, she never had. It had taken a few years for him to get more than a name out of her. “Go good. Promise.” She trusted him and her family maybe a little too much.

“Work,” he answered simply. “I handle security around here.”
It was true, in a sense, and most people accepted it easily enough. “Someone
has to make sure no one vandalizes the graves.”
