“In a place like this I’d almost consider that a compliment. Or at least no mean feat.” He hadn’t entered the place not knowing what it was, not knowing who made up a decent amount of the inhabitants. But it definitely meant he had a hard time believing her. “You should meet some of the people I work for if you think i’m weird. At least I don’t have clothes made of ice, or tentacles and I’m not fathomless darkness and despair hidden by a cloak.”
“That sounds more like some of my dad’s siblings… If any of the stories he and the few of his siblings I’ve met tell are even remotely true.” She hadn’t believed them, especially with her aunt Sapphira backing them up while being spaced out of her head on drugs she had split with Grayson. It had made for an interesting evening though, that much she was sure of.
“We’ve done a well enough job thus far and I hardly see it as my father’s business.” She won’t admit it, but it’s more than just sex for her. “My father does not get to dictate who or what shares my bed.”
“You’re very calm about the idea of being forced into a marriage you don’t want,” he observed, studying the other.
“It’s not an unheard of thing in my family. My dad and one of my moms were an arranged marriage at the start.” And it had worked out pretty great for them.
“You keep giving me reasons to threaten you,” he answered. “And I didn’t actually threaten it today.”
“Your reasons and most anyone elses’ are two vastly different things.” This close to the new moon, he was at his most docile and fragile. He wasn’t entirely sure Chase realized that.
