Chance hadn’t bothered to call ahead, but he did actually knock and wait for someone to answer. He was trying to do this right. Or so he was telling himself to distract from the fact that he couldn’t shadow travel quite yet and picking the lock was too much of an annoyance. It would hardly go over well if he entered into things already in a piss poor mood and he wasn’t banking on things going stellar in the first place.

But the point remained, he had thought of it all enough to finally swallow his pride and go to see her father.

Gabriel wanted to believe her but he’d been hurt too many times to trust with complete blind faith anymore. Still, he believed at least that Eva had turned a corner and was trying to fix herself, so that was a start.

“All I ever wanted was to help. I just wanted the old you back and it scared me that you might be gone forever.”

She reached out and touched his hand, trying to soften the blow of the next words on her tongue. It was hard to admit and she had a feeling it would be harder for him to hear.

“I  don’t think I’ll ever be the girl I used to be, Gabe. She’s..sort of like a dream of someone else. But I don’t want to be who I became either. I don’t know who I’m going to be down the line, but the one thing I don’t ever see changing is the fact that you’ve been my favorite person since we were kids and one of the only things I am honestly fucking terrified of losing forever.”

mythsandmonsters:

“I know…”

He shifted uncomfortably, looking at the floor with a sad expression that said he’d learned to be all too aware of that fact and that it killed him that he couldn’t do more to at least help.

“You can’t fix me, Gabe. No one really can. It’s something I actually have to work towards. I know you tried and I know I made it the worst fucking thing ever. You were more than I ever deserved and I’m sorry it’s taken things getting this bad for me to see that.”

It didn’t matter how many ways she said it, the words still tried lodging in her throat, but Ben and her dad were right. He needed to know he mattered.

“I didn’t mean to upset you,” he mumbled, feeling all the more stupid that the whole thing had been a huge misunderstanding and he’d spent weeks in the worst emotional pain he’d ever been in because of it.

“I just wanted to protect you.”

She swallowed hard and tried to smile, but it looked more like a grimace. “I know but… You can’t protect me from myself,” she answered softly, hating admitting it out loud.

mythsandmonsters:

“I panicked.”

Gabriel never liked admitting any sort of weakness or vulnerability, and in the heat of the moment, he’d taken the whole thing as evidence she really didn’t want him around anymore, especially after he’d been dumb enough to think kissing her was a good idea.

“I did too.”

It was a little startling to know that her dad had been right. But it also made it easier to accept some of the other things he had told her. Outside of her dad and Ben, this was probably the longest she had actually spoken to anyone in over a month.

“Oh, it’s safe. The welcome might not be the warmest at such short notice but it’s about the safest damn place I know of without too many questions asked,” he explained with a nod, knowing that they wouldn’t be turned away regardless of whether Ava was happy about it.

“I don’t want to trouble anyone with this,” he mumbled, kicking at a loose chunk of pavement. He didn’t like the idea of them not being the most welcome, but he understood. Ghouls were damn nasty overall and Kay wasn’t really much different.
