Cam sympathised. If he’d been in Thras’s shoes, he’d probably feel the same way, but the ferocity of the blaze had been so terrible that even if it were true that there could have been enough shadows, Thras couldn’t have gotten everyone out in time, not without suffering horrific injury himself.
There wasn’t really anything Cam could say to soothe the others pain, so he moved to give him physical comfort instead, finding it easier to show him that he understood his grief instead of just trying to tell him.
By the time Thras had been told, the entire house had been a hellscape of flames and it had been Ambrosine that held him back. Ros handled inhuman souls and she was just distant enough with everyone to do as she was meant to. It hadn’t gone over well, but she had held him back while he tried to throw himself into those flames after his family with no thought for himself.
He sagged against Cam, not remembering the last time he had let anyone actually touch him at all. He was tired of hurting.
