David Giuntoli
His jaw clenched and he was quiet for a long moment once the collar was off. Almost reluctantly, the words escaped, “Not lately.” A pause before adding, “I’m not going to shoot you for no reason.”
He shrugged, not entirely sure he believed that. “You threaten enough to keep me wondering what’s going to be the trigger,” he replied, his expression giving him a bit of a kicked puppy look.
His patience was thready on a good day and his fingers curled at his sides, nails digging into his palms to keep himself from doing something he would regret. “You’re a charming one, aren’t you?”
“You should meet my grandfather,” he replied, smirking a little as he dug out a pack of cigarettes. “You smoke?”
“Apparently. I’ve never met one before.” And maybe she shouldn’t have sounded so surprised. She wasn’t that old. But it seemed strange.
“I only knew my parents and little sister.” But she hadn’t seen them since she was young.
“You keep pushing your luck.” He let go of August’s wrists, slowly lowering his hands. “Are you going to take it off?”
“Some days just breathing is enough to push my luck,” he grumbled, looking sad more than anything. He didn’t have anything else to say as he did what asked before putting a large bit of distance between the two of them. He spent more time than anything walking on eggshells.
“It’s problematic regardless of the supposed compatibility of our species,” he answered flatly.
He shrugged, not really giving a damn if it was problematic. “Sucks to suck.”
Her head tipped slightly, staring at the feathers perhaps a bit rudely. “Can I ask what you are? I’ve never seen anything like that before.” It was somewhat exciting to know there were still new things in the world.
She shrugged and let her hair fall back into place. “Phoenix. We’re not exactly common anymore.” If their ashes scattered when they burned, they couldn’t really regenerate.
“You’re never going to let that go, are you?” he responded, slight scowl beginning to form.
“Seeing as you threaten to shoot me fairly often?” It was hard not to bring it up when Chase made those comments.
