“I know you are, but for how long? How long until the next time you push me away again and I have to watch you go running into the arms of whatever guy happens to show up at the bar that week? How long before you let my calls go to voicemail or leave my text messages unanswered for days on end?”

He didn’t mention how many times he’d gotten wasted and spent the night lying on Ben’s floor, pouring his heart out until he had nothing left inside, or that he’d deleted her number, or how many times he’d thought about removing every trace of her from his life and how the only thing that stopped him was that even after everything, he still couldn’t completely let go.

“All I can tell you is that I’m working on it. Twice a month with Ben. I don’t know if it’s working, if it’s going to work overall or what. I wish I had those answers, Gabe,” she answered honestly, her voice cracking about halfway through.

She bit at her lower lip, trying to find the right thing to say but coming up short. Instead, she pulled out her phone and unlocked it before handing it to him. The background was an older picture of the two of them, it had been her background since the day it was taken. “I never stopped caring. I just forgot how to express it or be a good friend.”

mythsandmonsters:

“You never do.” He muttered, his breath shuddering as he sighed.

He didn’t mean for it to sound like an accusation of any kind, but he’d exhausted himself trying to move on and he was never good at being diplomatic when put on the spot.

“I know you never meant to do anything you did, but it doesn’t change the fact that that’s what happened.”

She winced and closed her eyes, trying to force back the sting of tears and keep them from falling.

“I know and I know there’s nothing I can do or say to change that or fix it. I really, really am sorry.”

mythsandmonsters:

Even if she’d given him a chance to get a word in first, he wasn’t sure he could find any. He’d spent the last few months forcing himself to get over her, so to see her suddenly in the street like that was enough of a shock to render him silent as old wounds reopened and the emotions he’d fought to push down resurfaced.

“Okay.” Was all he managed to murmur, meaning that he was glad that she was trying to work on her problems, but his voice sounded small and fragile, breaking almost as he spoke.

It pained her to know he was still hurting and she had no idea what to do. She was having a hard time trying to fix herself and she knew she was pretty much useless in trying to fix anyone else.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you, Gabe. That was the absolute last thing I ever wanted to do.” Her lower lip was trembling, eyes already glossy with tears. Her body was stiff, almost like she was ready to run, but she forced herself to stand still, to face him like he deserved.

@mythsandmonsters

It had been weeks, a couple of months really, since Eva had seen him last. Honestly, she hadn’t been looking for him, not yet. She had been trying to sort through her own chaos, trying to find her way back to, well, herself. She hadn’t expected him to be in New York still.

“I didn’t know you were still in New York,” she started, holding up a hand before he could say anything. “I’m sorry I’m a shitty friend, Gabe, really, I am. But I’m working on it. Mom and dad have me doing therapy. I…I don’t have an excuse for not reaching out sooner, but I wanted.. I wanted to be working on things, to actually be trying before I came to see you because you deserve better from me. From anyone. And…I’m sorry.”

♫ Pete and Ren

Dearly Departed::Shakey Graves feat Esme Patterson

She was the first other spirit Peter had actually met outside of the older spirits that still lingered in the cemetery he was buried in. It helped that she was from about the same decade as him.

It had taken a little coaxing, but Ren had finally gotten him to stop haunting that damn stone. There were so many better things to see she had told him over and over until he was finally ready to leave his little bubble.

The world had definitely carried on and he wasn’t sure he liked it, but the place she was staying was nice. It was better than staying at his old house had been after his momma had left. It had been depressing to be there with the house empty, haunting nothing but a few items left over.

She had all the best movies from then too, even the ones his mother hadn’t let him watch. He hadn’t even noticed when she had progressed to films that had been released after his death. It helped that she let him watch the previews, kept him from noticing until they made the switch to DVD.

That had startled him enough to make him retreat into himself a little.

♫ Cord and Lucifer

Black Velvet::Alannah Myles

It had started with dancing drunk, so Lucifer was hardly surprised to see her dancing around the bar after hours, a baby on each hip. The song might have been a little out of place for babies, but it fit her.

The twins were making happy little gurgling sounds as Cord twirled and swayed, careful not to jostle the girls too much. She hadn’t even realized he was standing in the doorway watching them.

The last time she had been able to do this had been when Nia and Dex were little and she had missed it terribly. It made her nostalgic in the best ways.

When she went to spin again, she saw him there, a smile on his lips, and she began to laugh as she danced her way across the bar and shifted Evangeline to him and grabbed his other hand.

“Don’t think you’re getting out of dancing with us,” she teased, making faces at the babies to make them giggle again.

He didn’t protest as he was led into the center of the room. Why would he, honestly? Cord laughed as Raven fussed, making grabby hands for her sister until she was spun–

♫ Maddy and Eva

Heartless::Heart

Maddy had caught wind of the situation before Evangeline had even really had a chance to cross the border. It wasn’t very hard to stay on her tail either. She knew the girl’s usual route pretty well by now. The first couple of years Cord and Lucifer had let her drive down there, they had Maddy follow her about halfway home and then had someone else pick up the rest.

All it took was waiting for her to find a little motel for the night. She had stopped way earlier on than she normally would have. Any other time, it would have worried the leopard, but not today.

She waited for the girl to get her room and get “settled” before she was damn near kicking the door in.

Eva wasn’t in the mood to deal with Gabriel’s mother, but she didn’t really have a choice. Her face was swollen from crying the whole drive, what little makeup was left was smeared across her face. She looked awful.

Maddy just looked pissed.

“I don’t know what the fuck your issue is little girl, and I really don’t give a shit. You come anywhere near my fucking son again and I will gut your pretty little ass. Do you understand me?” the shifter snarled, grabbing the girl up by her throat and slamming her into the wall hard enough to crack it.

If she had been dizzy before, she was close to passing out now. The force of her head hitting the wall had only made the earlier vertigo come back with a vengeance and she swallowed hard, or as hard as she could with a clawed hand wrapped around her throat, and tried to nod as slowly as she could.

“You’ve hurt him for the last goddamn ti–”

♫ Aima and Kitty

Falling Slowly::Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

Aima couldn’t quite put his finger on the when of it all. Initially, he was only supposed to push at Kitty’s buttons, get past her defenses, be her friend. But somewhere along the way, he began to fall for the girl.

At first, he fought it, tried to pretend it wasn’t there. After all, he wasn’t supposed to fall for the girl. He was just supposed to get her back on the right path. But life never worked the way he thought it was supposed to and he began to wonder if this hadn’t been the actual plan all along.

She was curled up in the chair, half asleep with some movie on when he came home. The sight of her like that was enough to make him smile and Aima knew, in that moment, Kitty had become home to him instead of his apartment.

It was definitely more than he felt he deserved but he would be damned if he was going to let anyone hurt her or try to take him from her. In the span of time, he had fallen so completely for this girl, watched her go from broken and lashing out to smiling and trying, really trying, to make amends and repair bridges she had thought she had burned.

He proud of her and it only made him love her more. Even if he hadn’t quite found the words to tell her that just yet.

♫ Eva and Gabriel

Sometime Around Midnight::The Airborne Toxic Event

It had been weeks, a couple of months really, since Eva had seen him last. Honestly, she hadn’t been looking for him, not yet. She had been trying to sort through her own chaos, trying to find her way back to, well, herself. She hadn’t expected him to be in New York still.

Her mother had set up a therapy style thing, twice a month, with Ben. It hadn’t gone over too well at first, but it was easier talking to him than it would be to some stranger.

For a long moment, Evangeline considered running. But who was she kidding? Running was what had caused her issues in the first place and she knew he had caught her scent already.

He looked…almost content. Of course, there was a foot or so of snow on the ground and he hadn’t had to deal with her. Anyone would be happy with those sets of circumstances.

She was quiet as she moved to stand under the streetlight, the glow making her hair look a little more red and highlighting the lack of her usual make up.

“I didn’t know you were still in New York,” she started, holding up a hand before he could say anything. “I’m sorry I’m a shitty friend, Gabe, really, I am. But I’m working on it. Mom’s got me in therapy and–”

♫ Chay and Gypsy

He was passed out in the corner booth, the same one his dad was usually strung out in. Honestly, it hadn’t been what he had intended, but he was breaking down. Too many years of running catching up to him, the same dreams haunting him. It wasn’t even that he had gotten into his dad’s drugs so much as it was that he had pushed himself to the limits on staying awake.

When Gypsy tried to nudged him awake, he had nearly flipped, the usually hidden markings on his skin glowing a deep blue, his tired eyes lit with the same shade in a fiery flicker.

It took Chayton longer than he was proud of to realize he was at home and it was just Gypsy trying to take care of her.

“Sorry…sorry, ain’ slep’ proper in…” he glance at his phone, squinting to read the date through the dim screen. He hadn’t plugged the thing in in days. “Almos’ three weeks,” he groaned, the device slipping from his shaking hand. He didn’t care if it broke.

With a sigh, she slid an arm around his waist, intent on–
