The first thing Gabriel became aware of as he started to come to was how weirdly heavy he felt, like his body was made of lead and he couldn’t quite find the strength to will anything more than his fingers to move. Even his eyelids felt like they didn’t want to open but he managed it just barely enough to register the unfamiliarity of the room around him and a shape he did recognise sitting beside him.

“Am I dead?” he mumbled through dry lips, his voice a cracked whisper with how tired he felt.

“No but you sure as hell gave it your best try,” she answered, reaching out to take his hand. “Eli, Cord, Kori, and Leland saved your life. You’re in the hospital Eli works at,” she explained, not liking that his skin felt cool to the touch. He needed more blankets but she understood they were trying to keep him from getting tangled in the iv lines and what not.

“You’re one lucky kitten.”

Their mom had nearly gotten herself thrown out of the hospital and dad was was off with Warren. She hadn’t asked for the details of what they were going to do, she hadn’t needed to know. Instead, she was curled up in a gods uncomfortable hospital chair by Gabe’s bedside to make sure he didn’t wake up alone.

When he finally began to stir, she scooted the chair closer, still anxious but not wanting him to panic.

mythsandmonsters:

Gabriel was responding well to the continued dosing of epinephrine and cortisol and his airways were clear enough to let him breathe without a tube down his throat so that he could finally be sedated and given something for the pain that wouldn’t send him back into respiratory arrest.

By the time the ambulance came, he was out cold, Eli continuing to monitor his vitals for even the slightest flicker of change. Eli would have stayed to help clean up the mess, but he was needed on hand to see to it that Gabriel’s transfer went smoothly and he continued to remain in a stable condition.

“Keep me updated,” was all Cord had to say after they got Gabe loaded in the ambulance. He’d stay and help Ava and Leland get everything cleaned up. It would give him time to think of how to break the news to Evangeline too, honestly.

mythsandmonsters:

Eli gave a half shrugged nod in agreement. He wasn’t going to give Ava a hard time about it anyway, just equip her with a few tips to help in case of any more emergencies.

As badly injured Gabriel was, he was still extraordinarily lucky with the number of things that could have gone wrong from start to finish, and even with the less than ideal settings for treating him, there were still complications that could arise, so Eli wouldn’t relax just yet, especially since he still had to move the kid and talk to Rhys and Maddy about how long it might take for Gabe to recover.

It didn’t take long for Kori to get an ambulance there with one of the drivers she knew and trusted. Plus there were enough people there that could easily carry him out on a stretcher.

“Alright, let’s get the kitten to an actual medical facility,” Cord said as he came back down the steps with Kori in tow.

mythsandmonsters:

“True. Good thing Gabriel’s half vampire though. If he’d been a full shifter, I doubt Ava would have even got to him before his heart stopped. Whoever took a shot at him was a little sloppy though. Thank gods it caught his shoulder blade or it would have hit something major and dropped him on the spot.”

Eli had seen a few come through the ER with similar markers, though most of them hadn’t been as fortunate. Even more so, he knew that some hunters dosed their arrows and bullets with wolfsbane and other toxic substances, but they tended to be from the more sadistic clans who practically took down anything they could kill just for the sport of it. Gabriel’s attack, on the other hand, seemed almost amateurish. A spur of the moment track with the hallmarks of someone who was maybe still in training. Probably barely an adult themselves, but that wouldn’t make much of a difference depending who caught up with them first.

“It’s a good thing he wasn’t alone. If had been, he wouldn’t have been found in time. Kid’s got one hell of an angel on his shoulder.”

“Go easy on Ava when you scold her. She loves that kid and mortality ain’t something she’s good at,” was his parting words before heading up the steps to get the ambulance situation set up with Kori. The kid needed to be in the hospital with real supervision and equipment in case he took a turn for the worse.

“Willow just… go home,” he said, sounding far too tired. He din’t want to keep arguing with her, didn’t really want to keep dealing with this whole past life mess, if he was being honest.

“Make me,” she spat, ready for a fight. If she couldn’t have fun, the least she could do was piss someone off or push enough buttons to earn the chance to take a swing at someone.

mythsandmonsters:

“I work in the ER five nights a week. Shit situations pay the bills.”

It was nice to know his skills were appreciated though, even if it was pretty much second nature to him these days.

“Think I might stick a note on Ava’s fridge about what to do in a medical crisis though, for future reference. Can’t always bank on Warren being around to pick up the slack until one of us can get here.”

“I’ve seen folks in the field that don’t handle it nearly as well as you did.”

It was high praise coming from him, but he meant it. The kid was damn good and Cord knew Gabe would have been damn screwed had Eli not gotten there when he had.

“To be fair, she ain’t used to dealing with trying to keep folk alive. She’s more on the end of killin’.”

mythsandmonsters:

“My only concern is Gabriel right now, so the people I’m going to be telling anything to is his parents, so you can handle Eva whatever way you think is best.” He shrugged, monitoring Gabe’s vitals and adjusting the flow slightly on one of the IV’s.

“That’s a good idea. He’s stable for now, but he’s not out of the woods yet, so at least if he takes a turn for the worst in an ambulance, he’s in a better setting for it than Ava’s basement or the back of a car.”

“You might want to sedate his mother,” he advised, knowing just how out of hand Madeline could get. “She’s sort of the bite the messenger type.”

Cord nodded and headed for the steps. “I’ll get it set up. You’re damn good in a shit situation, Eli. You’d have been a good sort during world world 2.”

mythsandmonsters:

“As far as I know, Gabriel was the only one hit. Better off asking Warren ‘cause I got the call to come straight here so I don’t know who else was involved.”

He had a feeling that it hadn’t happened under either of Ava or Warrens watch, so it had to have been called in by someone else, but Eli didn’t exactly have time to stop and ask questions while he was keeping Gabriel from crashing.

“If anyone else was hurt, it can’t have been bad then. Just…don’t let Evangeline know Gabe’s hurt? She’s in town right now and it’ll just freak her out.”

He paused, glancing over at the kid again. “I’ll have Kori get an ambulance so he can be moved right. She knows drivers and there’s no way he should be moved through shadow travel again.”

mythsandmonsters:

“Ideally, he should have been there already, but this is far from ideal. At least he can be sedated now, so once that’s set up and he’s comfortable, it should be okay to move him. I’ll call ahead and get a room cleared for him so it’s quiet and secure. I wanna keep him under for a day or two, just so any silver that’s still in his bloodstream clears out and he doesn’t move around too much and cause himself a setback.”

Eli had done what he could to get the arrowhead out in tact and cleaned the wound of any obvious fragments, but it was up to Gabriel’s body to heal and clear itself of any microscopic particles and he was damn lucky whoever shot him hadn’t coated the tip in wolfsbane too or the kid wouldn’t have even made it to Ava’s in the first place.

“Yeah, well, we both know Avalon ain’t the best in a crisis that requires medical attention. She can handle mentally broken but she’s always sucked at needing a hospital,” he sighed, stripping off his gloves before running a hand over his face.

“Who was he with? Were they hurt too or..?” He wasn’t sure if he wanted to know what else was going on but he did need to know if anyone else needed treated.
