“She wouldn’t be that way if you hadn’t gotten into her head in the first place. Everything she did to herself is because of you. Everything that happened to her, from then right up until what Jericho did to her? That was because of you! It’s all your fault, and I don’t need to know her to know that, so no, I’m not blaming her for being another one of your victims, but don’t pretend like she’d be just the same if you hadn’t wormed your way in and manipulated the fuck out of her the entire span of it.”
Chance wasn’t the only one trying to keep from hitting the other. As much as Jack oathed to admit it, it was one clear thing he had definitely inherited, although he had found better means to control it that were far less destructive.
“You wanna understand me? How about you start by thinking about what it felt like when you were chained up, when everything you did care about had been taken away from you and all you had was nothing but pain and torture, and the not knowing when any of that would end. Think about all of that, and you might start getting an idea of how what you did to me felt. Then think about what that would have been like if it had happened to you when you were just a kid.”
“No, she chose me when she was young. She used to steal Oona’s clothing to get my attention. She knew damn sure what I was and it wasn’t until I left bruises on Manson did she begin to have an issue with things.” Sure he had been sweeter to her when she was young, but it had been mostly to keep his mother and Azrael off of his case until she really started to look like their mother.
The kid was getting on his nerves more than anything at this point and he dug out a pack of cigarettes. It didn’t bother him that some of them had dried blood on them and he didn’t really care if it bothered his son either.
“You carry a stronger emotional response and a deeper range, so I’m not really sure that would be helpful. I felt anger more than anything.” There was no way he was going to admit that he had felt the solitude of it deep in his bones, that there had been a desperation underlying it all. It was too much like admitting weakness.
The elder wolf was more than content to remain perfectly still and forego any indication that the child tugging and tangling his hair was causing discomfort.
Even before his ordeal, Isaac had never been one to be too authoritarian over the little ones. Pups were pups, and that meant they were still learning, no matter how rough and rambunctious they could get at times. However, he would happily put his foot down with any older wolf that should know better, oftentimes stepping in when he saw other adults being too harsh on the young ones.
When the pup finally sat back, she looked terribly distraught. The braids she had been trying to do hadn’t turned out anywhere near the way they were supposed to look. “Why aren’t they pretty?” she whined, pouting up at him.
Cadi smiled sweetly and reached out to ruffle her hair, trying to calm her down before she burst into tears. A crying pup was her absolute least favorite thing.
